Why have these Morgans been mutilated? Someone did it on purpose. Can you answer why? (There really is a good explanation!)

My guess is that they were done by the casinos so people wouldn't take them away as collectibles.

Dollars use in casinos years ago?
  • My guess is that someone's significant other got home and told him/her how much was paid for the coins because they had a specific date and in a fit of rage took said grinder to coins date in an act of revenge.

Just a guess of course, I could be wrong.
  • They r probably all rare dates, maybe some1 got mad at some1 else and messed up there collection.

You guys are great! That's right. Casinos definitely got tired, real quick, back in the early sixties with collectors trying to grab these up. By mutilating the coins and removing the dates they prevented all that nonsense!

Then, the U.S. Government, in their infinite wisdom did esentually the same thing by "removing" the MintMarks on coins (1965; 66, and 67).

Casinos and the U.S Mint: Killjoys!!

Interesting! I never knew that about the casinos.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Oh sure. The other guys may have been technically correct. But would it have made a good made for tv movie? NO! Where as mine would have starred Brad Pitt as the obsessive compulsive numismatist who could never say no to a coin that he didn't have. And Jennifer Aniston would have been the wife who just couldn't take it anymore and went berserk and took a grinder to all of his coins.

Plot needs a little more work, but you get the idea image
  • It could of been worse. Back in the 1880`s and 1890`s, out in the West, People use to flip them in the air and shoot them. Kind of like shooting clay pidgons today to show off there shooting skills.

I see that George Morgan is bidding on them. Must want his dollars back. As for why? Maybe it was to scrape off a little silver and cheat someone in a bulk silver transaction?

I'm thinking Glenn CLose, or my ex-wife - they are equally qualified.

    Keets,

... ditto; I think that was just for the movies.

    Braddick,

Are you ever going to even try and answer my question - WHY DO YOUR LINKS NEVER OPEN UP IN a second window like everyone else's? If I close the window instead of hitting the back button on my browser, it always shuts down the forum. If anyone else has any ideas I would like to hear 'em.

Winchester '73 starring Henry Fonda (I believe). They were having a competition for the rifle and someone shot a hole right through the middle of the coin, and then the winner fired a round right through the existing hole to win! Gotta love the movies.......

  • I think some person tried to alter the dates and failed so they put a grinder to it.
  • I guess it was a little far fetched.image I need to go easy on the beer next time.image
  • They were stolen and somone filed off the dates.

Note that braddick's link displays the URL. From my observations, if the link shows the URL, it opens in the same window. If it shows anything else, it opens in a new window. I don't think that's intentional, it's probably a small bug in the forum software.
