Body Bagged @ NGC!

Well my first submission @ NGC didn't go well. I sent in 15 coins total. 3 on the Express Coupon.

The 3 on the coupon were all BBed. I can't say I didn't expect it. I thought 2 were definite BB candidates, but I had hope for 1.

On the bright side, the Express Coupon indicated a 48 hour turnaround. NGC had it done in 24 hours.

The other 12 are on an Economy Submission, I let you all know how long their Economy is taking.

The most interesting aspect was that I received an apology email from their grading Finalizer. I was blown away! BBed my coins and then apologize for it. No offense PCGS, but you guys can learn from NGC's customer service division!

    Why were they body bagged?

Let me guess. AT'd Peace Dollars?

There was a 23-S cobolt blue peace $ that even I thought was AT, but for free I thought why not give it a shot. Another was a original toned 22-S that was hairlined, but I figured maybe I could squeeze it into a holder. The other was a toned 25 that I really thought was real. I showed it to John (Strat) and Dale (Toningintheblood), Dale said AT, John said original. So I tried it and NGC said AT. I might try it again on another submission though. Luckily these three combined I think may have been a $75 investment, so I'm not that broken up about it.

    Its all a learning process.

My guess is that a "possibly questionably toned" coin would have a much better chance of getting into a slab if it wasn't hanging around with other, "even more questionably toned" coins at the time the graders were looking at it. If, by any chance, the "original" coin happened to be the third, it might not even be seriously considered, just kind of moved on through the assembly line. Perhaps if it was first, then the other two came along, it might be relooked at and bagged after having made it through!

Coinguy1, as a one-time grader for said grading service, would you say that my theory holds any water?

I just had a 1882-CC BB'd at NGC for that. Thought it might go DMPL or at least PL. HAIRLINES. So what? Mark it down a grade! But Body Bagged for that? They were real slight too. I just don't get it. Nicks are OK. Put in your pocket for a year. That's fine. Just don't slightly rub it or elseimage
  • Look at your coins closer, they must be apologizing for something that was their fault, or maybe they just feel bad for stealing your money! If they really meant it they would give you some more coupons!

    Zenny, you asked :

"My guess is that a "possibly questionably toned" coin would have a much better chance of getting into a slab if it wasn't hanging around with other, "even more questionably toned" coins at the time the graders were looking at it. If, by any chance, the "original" coin happened to be the third, it might not even be seriously considered, just kind of moved on through the assembly line. Zenny, your theory does hold some water. If the first two coins examined in a 3 coin submission are A.T. or otherwise no-grade material, the third coin to be examined might meet with some skeptical eyes. I will point out, however, that the coins are not always examined in the precise order in which they appear on the invoice, or at least they weren't when I graded there. For example, the third coin on the invoice might be examined first by one grader and last by another.

WSM - Michael, despite disappointing, though not shocking grading results, was nice enough to compliment NGC on their customer service. You, on the other hand, who haven't even seen the coins in question, are apparently so biased or paranoid, that you choose to view NGC's excellent customer service as a possible admission of some fault in the matter. Then, you go on to say that if they were sincere, they would have thrown in even more coupons. That says a lot about you and the blinders that you wear.

Michael, kudos to you for being a good sport and spreading the word on the beyond-the-call of duty customer service on the part of NGC in this instance.

    Mark Feld,

Don't pay any mind to WSM. He's the resident idiot, and very few other people pay him any mind either. He knows so little about numismatics as well as the coin industry, yet he speaks as an authority. He's too out of it even to realize that he's clueless.

If you ask him to tell you about Stellas, he'll either talk about astronomy or about his past girlfriends...

I've always thought this, but then you hear stories. There is a fellow fourm member that submitted, I believe, 15 coins and 13 got BB for AT, yet two made it. The coins all looked similar. Perhaps the grading service felt those two were also AT, but OK enough to slab?

I certainly hope NGC's Economy turnaround is faster than that of ANACS'. Still no sign of the submission I sent out around November 3rd... image

ANACS is pretty fast, I did a 10-10-10 special and the coins just arrived today. They received them Dec 2nd.

I would give them a call on Monday!

As for the toned 25, I'll try it again later with better coins and see what happens. I really think it's natural but I'm no expert.
