Another Killer Jefferson!!!!

I came across this 1966 UCAM Jefferson and thought I'd post for some forum perusal and discussion. My personal sense is that it's overgraded at MS68 due to what appears to be some contact marks on the jawline and the haziness around the rim, especially on the obverse. I was struck by the fact that the frost seems so heavy on the lettering, again on the obverse more than the reverse, so it seems like it's probably an early strike with a really good obverse die.
A few questions I would ask: If the marks on the jawline are a planchet flaw, do you think they would be overlooked when assigning the grade? With regard to price, as a pop 1 coin for either PCGS/NGC it seems the BIN is low. Do you think the seller assumes it's overgraded as well and given the description hype about the NGC registry, is hoping to sell quickly based on the "holder" grade?
Still a nice coin in a time frame when the mint seemed confused and poorly directed. I view the 1965-67 SMS coinage in true Deep/Ultra Cameo as a real mover in the future. Like the man said, they just aren't makin' these things anymore!!!

<< <i>Underpriced?

I am absolutely freaking speechless.
<< <i>If it was undergraded couldn't you send it in under the grade garrenty? >>
They don't have to admit fault...

that's a fabulous coin. It's just that I never met a $3000 jeff.
No offense intended, but if I ever find myself buying a $3000 jeff I hope and pray it's because I nailed the PowerBall.
i can't afford to buy it myself. and as i posted earlier, i think it's overgraded. what strikes me is that as an MS68 it would be a series rarity.
if you look at the PCGS pop and don't consider the 1964, 1994 and 1997 SMS coins----and the 1994-P's which are probably mis-attributed SMS----there are less than 15 coins from the entire 65 years graded MS68. and then there's the UCAM/DCAM designation which is absolutely miniscule for all SMS denominations in all three years.

edited to say if that coin started at $1 with no reserve i'm certain the bidding would be very intense and the final price would surprise more than a few.
I also agree with the coin looking to be technically over graded by a point.
Considering that the 1965 PCGS MS67DCAM 5c went for well into five figures, the price for this coin seems in line.
than what one would expect on a MS-68. The reverse die is probably brand new also
but it's a shame it isn't a nicer one. The obverse is a real knock out and is struck with
a new die.
Gee whiz........... a '66 NGC 68UCAM Jeff!
Okay........ sold on Wednesday and listed on ebay Thursday. Hmmm.......
BTW this coin sold on teletrade about 6weeks ago for something like $3400 but was returned and sold again. Now why would someone return an accurately graded irreplaceable pop 1 coin? I'd love to own a pop 1 Jeff but I'd really like mine accurately graded........
Edited to add - if you have the DjVu installed click on that button, blow this sucker up to 100%-150%, and try not to scratch your head *doh*

i guess if i visited teletrade a bit more often i would have seen it. thanks for the "up close and personal in hand assessment" frank. those marks really jumped out at me, also, as did the frost. it seems unusual for NGC to miss the numerical grade like that. maybe a bad day at the office.

<< <i>I assuming this was the coin sold on Teletrade recently. I purchased it and returned it. My opinion it is a DCAM by PCGS standards but will not grade more than MS66DCAM. The contact marks on the check are distracting. >>
Thanks for jumping in with firsthand knowledge Frank. Sometimes its hard to assess by pics but your statement confirmed what I thought I could see. Love that frost but........ I've got one of the 1966 PCGS 66DCAMs and this NGC coin looks more "beat up" than mine And from what I recall this was about a six week turnaround at teletrade which is consistant with getting coins back in auction that I have returned, so more than likely the same coin.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
My Jefferson Nickel Collection
I think the mark on the jaw keeps it out of the pq catagory and don't have a problem with the numerical grade but $1,600 & $2,999 would be pq money.
Going by the scan the cameo doesn't look strong enough for a pq cam never mind Ultra Cam but that may just be the scan.
does anyone else think there'll be some sniping??

given all that, i truly believe if it lists with no reserve the bidding would be more active. that one needs to be archived cause i bet we see it in a few months, maybe even crossed. hey, i'm gonna go save the picture!!!!!!!!

Getting a sms Jeff in 68 at PCGS is like getting a modern 70. Just about impossible. And there is no way that coin would dcam.
