Just got this 1875-S in today:
I don't know the first thing about how to grade them. What would this grade?

Not at all. You're oblong Trade dollar is quite interesting.
If I were being mean & evil I'd tell you about the 1964 proof set with an accented hair and a cameo cent I picked up today for $9.50, but I'm not mean and evil....

Must be bad photography.

Peeshaw! I nailed three at that price last Saturday alone.

and the strange mix of flat and detailed areas, it doesn't look right to me. Could just be the pics I guess.

Tough to say without seeing it in person.

Yeah, it does look like the scans they do. Probably because I use a black background. I'd guess they do also. All my raw coin shoots look like that:

I wouldn't even buy a G 04 Trade Dollar raw. Those coins were counterfeited in a big
way in Asia and some of them can be found for sale here. The 1875 S was the most
popular date to forge.
I picked up a very good counterfeit when I was in Vietnam. It was an 1875 CC, so I
thought it had a better chance of being genuine. It even fooled a number of dealers.
Apparently the tip it was a fake to those in the know was that the silver content wasn't
quite right. One could not tell just from looking at it in the holder; they had to listen to
the coin's ping when it hit metal (it had so many other scratches, that this didn't make a
difference).
Shiro and TDN can tell you more about this than I can. I could have gotten $80 for mine,
but sold it to a guy with the clear understanding that it was a fake for $20.
