A 1958 Topps Baseball Question

I have just started working on a 1958 set. Every everything I have ever read on the 58 set says that the first series ends at card #110. I recently purchased the Phillies team card. On the back is the 2nd series checklist. It states the the 2nd series starts at card #89. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I don't think they meant "series" literally. They did the same thing in 1959. 88 cards just happened to fit on the back of the card nicely.
