Grade this Columbian please. Do you agree with the grade?

I just got this coin back yesterday. Can you please venture a grade? I'll post the grade later.

Thanks
Ogden

I think the ding in the hair really keeps the grade of this coin down as it is really distracting.

Otherwise it looks very nicely struck but because of the ding I wouldn't want to go higher than 63.

I agree, the back is great, but there are some issues with Columbus that are going to hold it down.
  • On the bright (no pun intended) side, Columbians are a bit more difficult to find completely untoned like that.

I think it could go 64 because the ding is not in a prime focal area, but a secondary one. Depends on how bright the contrast is of the exposed metal to the surface. Looks like the lighting in the shot accentuated it quite a bit.

Looks high-end 63 possibly squeak a 64 out of it.

Hi Ogden, a nice looking coin but it's to hard to tell from the pictures if there is a slight rub. If no light rub ms63 with a rub AU. The obverse on these coins usually have weak hair detail on the lower curls and yours seems to be better in this area than most. mike image

AU58. Picture 2 seems to reveal wear on the high points.

I think it has enough field and device distractions for a 63.

  • When I bought this coin I thought it was 64 or maybe 65. The field is almost flawless. I did not see a mark anywhere on the reverse and the strike appeared great. When I got the slabbed coin back I was so surprised that it was graded AU-58. I still don't get it. I know that there is a slight pit in the hair, but that's about it. The only thing I can do it resubmit it, but I hardly think it could go from 58 to MS-63+. For the most part most of you thought as I did. The coin is more beautiful in person. I know that there are betters Columbian's out there, but I've never seen a nicer one.

  • Looks like there is some light wear in the hair behind Columbus' cheek.

i think the coin is indeed au. i guessed ms-61/2 because that is often what sliders get slabed at. i don't think you ought to try it again.

  • I'd say MS-63.

Edited to say: Ogden, I was comparing yours to one I have in a PCGS 63 holder, yours seems to have more detail than mine so I figured 64 without the ding, net 63. I am quite surprised!
  • Joe, thanks! The pictures I posted were under magnification and the ding is really hard to see with the naked eye. I guess it's just another grading lesson. Costly, but what isn't.

    Thanks to all

    Ogden
