I was going to sell my collection but the wife said “No way”

First of all, let me apologize in advance for posting this here, but I rarely post on any of the other boards so I decided to post this here.

I’ve been sitting at my computer for a few hours now and have been surfing the web for the latest medical information on Cancer. Yes, that’s right, Cancer. My doctor fired that bomb on me yesterday morning. I am not so proud to say that I am the owner of CTCL (not CLCT the Collector’s Universe stock ticker code). CTCL is Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, which is a general term for skin lymphomas such as Mycosis Fungoides (MF) that I have. This is a low pop Cancer, only 16,000 cases in the USA.

My wife and I were talking, and I told her that I should sell my collection and start focusing on reducing our debt. She flat out said, "No". She wants us to continue to live our lives the way we were, and she is looking forward to going to the National next year. What a women!!!

The day after Christmas I will begin my road to recovery or long-term remission. Therefore, please allow me a few days to respond if you happen to email me or send me private message.

Thanks for listening.

  • It's important to have a hobby that will help divert your attention from what you have to deal with there. Eliminating your collection and focusing in on reducing your debt isn't exactly what I would call a pick-me-up activity. Your wife knows how much you enjoy collecting and knows you will be in better shape mentally if you continue pursuing something you enjoy doing. Reducing your debt can come naturally from setting up a budget, focusing your interests, and trying to be more creative in how you add to your collection - like doing more trading. I wish you and your family the best of luck.

Your wife is a blessing like a picture of Mother Theresa. image If you don't know the story about her picture it was placed on a womans stomach who was terminally ill and she is no longer sick. It's recognized as Mother Threresa's second miracle. One more miriacle and she will be considered a saint.

I don't know you but know of you and what you've done for the hobby as well.I wish you the best of luck in this battle you have to deal with.Hope you come out on top.

  • Carlos, hang in there and keep fighting it. I have been reading your posts for a little while now and appreciate your insight into a hobby which we all share and love. My father is fighting through a rare form of skin cancer right now, it showed through bottom eye lid in his right eye. After a couple of surgeries and some down time he is recovering. Some days are better than others but keep fighting it. My prayers will go out to you, your terrific wife, and your family.

  • Carlos,

You have a lot of great support here. You are a top-notch collector and represent this wonderful hobby so well. I've known that for a while now, even before I became a member of these forums. I have not had any better transactions on graded cards, ebay or otherwise, than the several I've had with you. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers each day and keep posting here.

Thank you for making my collecting experience better.

    I have to tell you...
Just three months ago I was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. I had surgery on October 10th and just finished over 4 weeks of radiation treatment. Thank God nothing spread and I got thru my fight. You truly never know the things people go thru...you would really be amazed sometimes. I am only 29...so it was a giant reality check.
But this isnt about me...it is about you...you will get thru...just keep your head up and you will fight thru it!!!
As for the collection...it may sound cheezy...but my collection is EXACTLY what helped me get thru my Cancer. Having something to take your mind off of everything that is going on is the ideal cure. Enjoy the collection...sit back and look at what you have. And believe me...this is coming from someone who is far from debt-free. Enjoy collecting!!
    Happy Holidays!!

  • Carlos,

Although I don't know you,the volumes that are echoed on this board attest to the fact that you are truely a special person.Remember that the Lord does not give us challenges that we cannot handle.I echo the sentiments of the other board members.Your wife must also be very special and that in itself makes you a blessed man.Positive attitudes and baseball cards will go a long way toward helping you with a speedy recovery. My family and I will pray for you and we will add you to our book of prayers in church.

I know exactly what your going through. In October of 1993 I was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. On November 1st of that year I had a Colon resection and then underwent six months of chemo. I was very lucky as mine was caught in an early stage. It's been nine years for me now and everything seems to be alright. If you need someone to talk with contact me and we can talk by phone or e-mail prbmmore@lightbound.com That is if you want to talk about that or the hobby or whatever is on your mind. God bless and your in my prayers.
