Disappointing '67 cello packs...

Had an invoice posted today which included the VERY BEST of 2 cello packs I bought and opened in November. These cards literally went from cello, to Card Saver to PSA. I won't get deep into the whole thing about Byron looking at them before I submitted them at Ft. Wash., (but he did), and he also peeked at the '65's on the invoice.

The Grades speak for themselvesimageimageimage I don't think I'll be doing any cello packs any time soon. Sad part is I know these were the nicest 1967 cards I'd ever seen when I submitted--as nice as my nicest 9's--. I was sure only centering on a few would prevent 9's, but the majority looked to be certain 9's. Why else would I submit at $10 per? Well, Grader of Death wins again--image

I know some of the more experienced '67 crew warned me about this. Sometimes the kid has to put his hand on the stove himself. Any other vintage cello packs to Card Saver to grading horrors to share? Misery loves company...

Sorry to hear that. Do you recall if the 1967 5's had any surface wrinkles in it? I have some (not from the cello I bought and haven't opened) which have that problem. I would take the few that were the strongest 9 candidates, crack them out and resubmit during the next grading special. My guess is you'll get at least something to bump up provided you don't get the same grader of death.

    Eric,

Sorry that it didn't work out.

I thought about buying some cellos to do my own "personal search" through some cellos for some of the 5 1967's that I am missing. I think it was either Dan M or Jim M that talked me out of it. At least you picked up the Hoerner in a 9 ... it was one of the tougher cards for me.

Given the fact that the grades change from submission to submission due to inconsistency...maybe you should roll the dice again with the same cards.

    Regards,

  • The 1965 don blasingame should bring a nice premium. It's one of the most difficult 8's in the set. Sorry about the results - I've been there also.

    Ouch EJ!

Definitely took a whacking on that one! Good luck on the resubmissions - and remember...

EJ sorry to hear the results were not desirable. However,I just stumbled upon some good news for 67-70 collectors.A dealer I've been working with on my set just sent in 3000 67-70 cards so no need to fret in the nearby future for those who collect those years.
  • Maybe they should be pickier about putting better cards in those cellos.

Does he sell on eBay? Hopefully he has some low pop 1969 commons in there.

  • Uh-oh. Population explosion coming from 1968.

Oh, wait. Already been one. Never mind.

Not cellos, but I've taken cards directly from 1960 and 1962 wax packs and gotten mostly 7's and 8'ocs with no 9's. Print dots, gum stains and centering have terminated my pack-opening days.
