Now THIS is a funny auction item

I was browsing Heritage's Internet auction for this coming week, checking out the buffalo nickels.

I found this "beauty": 1934 5c ANACS Net VG8 Details (Fine cleaned).

Here is their auction description:

1934 5C VG8 ANACS. The current Coin Dealer Newsletter (Greysheet) wholesale "bid" price is $0.55

OK, so this coin is worth less than $1 and since I can find them in uncleaned Fine condition or better all day long, what am I missing here? As soon as you bid the first $1, you get stung with the minimum +$6 buyer's premium plus postage. For a generic buffalo that is really worth about 10 cents. Can someone explain this one?

  • This is really a case of buy the coin, not the slab, er, literally.

Somebody in their listing department must have a sense of humor.image

  • Beats me. Maybe it`s because PCGS and NGC has never graded one as VG8. Or maybe it`s an IQ test.

Most likely this coin was submitted to ANACS to meet a minimum requirement for one of their specials. Why Heritage is listing it is a mystery.

Heritage EI where they tell me they don't want any coin consigned worth less than $50?
That is so we don't crowd out their dumping grounds.
    Heritage sucks!!!
  • I wonder what the Pop is on that beaut?

    drsvenghali,
Pops are listed in the link and pretty funny:

PCGS Pop 0 in VG8 / 987 higher (lowest listed at PCGS is AU53)
    NGC Pop 0 in VG8 / 449 higher

It's not like this is some great Braddick rarity. I'll bet there are at least 5,000+ extant in Fair to VG.

5,000? There are at least twice that many belt buckles full of them.
