Any good Deals lately...

Seems like a great time to be buying. Prices seem a little soft in many areas of the market. I have made some nice purchases in recent weeks via auction houses in England and Germany. Not anything off EBAY, but gearing up to do some bidding now.

How about any of you folks....Any night before Christmas steals to help you out on the registry?

There was a steal in the Mastro auction for a 1940 Joe Jackson PSA 7. SMR is $4250, and the hammer was $2443 w/premium. Two problems,.....

  • Bernie,

    Speaking of mastro,

The hoard of tiffany cases was crazy 86's especially I priced it out at 24,000
and able to move in a month final price 16,000 not saying you could have
got it of course but could have pushed the envelope....Not to mention the
    value was closer to 30...

King K, I collect primarily golf cards form the 1920 and 1930's just picked up a set of 1900 cope's golfers set of 50. this is comparable to, well ....nothing I guess, maybe Wilson Franks, becuase you NEVER see the cards, and they are 100 years old.

In 8 years of collecting these vintage golf cards, I have only ever seen 3 complete sets for sale (including the one I purchased) Once in awhile Steve Berman from Maple Leaf collectibles will put an odd card from the set on Ebay but you don't EVER see these in complete set form.Got mine from a referral from an auction in the U.K. and bought it privately from a guy in Germany for about $3000. (Trust me that is a steal)

I put a note on the board a few weeks ago right after the purchase as some of the cards I purchased have some tobacco stains on the reverse and a few have some minor paper loss. Curious as to how this would affect the grading. I have no intention of selling these, but it is still fun to get high grades! Plus I doubt I will have much competition on this set for the 2003 awards.

As for my Churchman sets, they are great cards as well. I have many PSA 8's as well has some of the finest examples graded of many cards (granted not many have been graded as the vintage golf guys are a much lessor sect of a cult following like you Kellogs folks)!!!

I would be happy to post a few scans of these as well on this board. I am going to work on getting scans in the registry, but just moved to a new house and hope to have some time to do it over the holidays. I need help to put scans on here so if some one could PM with the "how - to" I will let you all enjoy some pics. also would love some opinions from other registry members as to your feelings on how some of the cards would grade.

On a last note on this post......
Good story about the registry. I had 2 of the first sets signed up when they started making the registry more widespread. We were sent an e-mail telling us to submit requests to be added to the registry. I e-mailed BJ IMMEDIATELY and got put on the top of the list. I really took some heat on the boards for awhile because it did not make much sense to many people why they would put GOLF sets like the ones I collect on the list early and leave out much more widely collected baseball, football, basketball, and hockey sets..... Guess the early bird does get the worm!

I always welcome questions and such about what I collect. Have enjoyed reading what all you folks have to say although I don't post all that much (at least have not in the past).

  • Hi Dave,

That was a good price on the Copes set. It books for about $6000 in Murrays price guide and they seem to undervalue scarce sets. Whilst I don't collect golf cards I do collect 20's and 30's Soccer and cricket tobacco cards and have a couple of nice sets from Churchmans, Wills, Gallacher etc. I have been thinking about submitting some (waiting for a pre-war registry special) to PSA.

I often attend cigarette card shows in the UK so let me know if there is anything you are looking for.

I was looking at that lot, but consider two things:

    1) The bid ended at $15,307 + 15%, or $17,600. The next bid put you in at $19,400. Not exactly a ton of room to sell at $24,000.

    2) In this soft market, I very doubt you could move them out at full retail in a month - one case of Tiffany Traded sets hitting ebay might get the full $$, but put another case (much less 8) up in the same time, and you'll get slaughtered. And you can't break them anymore. I priced the deal out to sell at $20,000 with some discounting for moving the qty - which is why I was the underbidder on the lot.

On the flip side, I would have paid $35,000 for the 86TT Tiffany sets alone 14 months ago.
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • Just curious -- Are there any cards of Francis Ouimet who won the 1913 Open ? Thanks.
