1783 George Washington token

Just received this George Washington token I bought on eBay last week from a seller in England. The only images I have to compare it to are the ones in the Redbook. Would appreciate comments from some of you Early American Copper guys. Looks way too nice to be a genuine counterfeit. image

  • Can only get the one pictrue of the reverse to come up. What makes you think that it's a counterfeit? I'll haveto do some checking but I remember correctly these were made in England during the 1811 - 1820 period during one of their periodic coin shortages. They were the early 19th century version of the Conder tokens. Problem was unlike during the 18th century period, there wasn't a collecting fad and most of the tokens produced circulated. Almost all of the Washington pieces listed in the Redbook at actually British tokens. (There was a Pro-America faction in the British populace and this would have fit in with the time frame of the War of 1812.)
