What is a good short set to start?

What are some short sets that have great potential of rising in value?

edit to say i want to spend less than $35 on each coin.

  • QDB recommended the Proof Merc set in his top 10 list of sets. Small list of dates and very available in higher grades.

  • I'm not an expert by any means, however, I began last year putting together a set of $2 1/2 Gold Indians in MS63 or better and they have appreciated according to PCGS. (I haven't tried to sell them though :-))

It has a total of 15 coins...It is getting tougher to find them.

A really cool set that is all quite short are proof bust dollars. They only ran from 1801 through 1804, but you need both varieties of the 1804image

  • even though they were producaed by the millions, a set of rosies in BU is really cheap--if you wanted a short set, just get the silver issues, 46-64. I think that'll be the next set i start. (i've already got them in circulated, now i want a nice dansco filled with shiney, happy Rosies. . . .)

Edit: I don't think they have much potential for rising in value, though. . .there are millions out there. . .

I was going to write that 20 cent pieces are both a good and short set, but now I see your price range. How about BU Edward VII large cents?

How about a "short set" of Walkers. For $35 you can get many in MS63/64. Proof Franklins. Most are cheap. 2¢ pieces?

Doesn't get much shorter than FE's, if you leave out the 1856 pattern.

  • A really neat 3-coin "mini" set I just purchased at the last LB show was the 1943 P-D-S Lincoln Steel Cents in MS-66. Each individual coin was less than $35 with the "S" mint selling for a little more than the P and D cents.

I think the potential for these to rise in value is there, and I enjoy showing this one-time US Mint metal composition to non-collectors.

the walker ms short set is a great undervalued buy right now even with the great rise in some of the 65 66 67 coins but if you do buy these coins go for monster eye appeal and exceptional toning you will be rewarded i think in the future

also go for a set of 1936 to 42 proof coins!!

    or a type set of nice proof 64 65 66 67 coins 1860 to 1915

or a type set of the three barber coins dime quarter half the seated coins half dime dime quarter half dollar twenty cent piece and trade dollar

or a type set of one three cent nickel and three cent silver
a type set of one flyer indian and lincoln cent three total

or a type set of indian cents one ms coin one proof coin

or a set of 1909 coins one ms proof indian one ms 1909 lincoln

or a type set of nicks one shield proof ms one lib nick ms proof one buff ms proof!! jeff ms and proof

the list goes on and on

Do a "type" set. You can get quite a few different coins in decent shape for 35.00 or less!

Lakesamman.....Don't be attracting any more competition on the FE's!image

I think some people missed part of his post, more specifically the part where he said: i want to spend less than $35 on each coin.

Hey, how about matte proof St. Gaudens?

I noticed that quite a few PCGS MS66-68 SBA's are up on eBay right now. They should'nt be too expensive (with the exception of the MS68), and its a really short set!
