Need your help...ripoff in progress......

My cousin being the good guy that he is, was at a pawn shop and stumbled upon the coin section. He said he thought of me and picked up a well circulated barber quarter. That's not bad, I'll never turn down a coin. The kicker is he paid $13 for it. He then came over and gave it to me as a christmas present and proceeded to ask me what I thought it was worth and if he did good. I did the honorable thing and told him grading is very subjective and it could be worth anywhere between $2 and $15(praying that he won't go back to that shop to buy me anything)

I went up to that shop at lunch(just to see) and asked them is the price on the holder was the sale price. The lady said yes, but they wouldn't buy them at that. I asked her how much. She said she didn't know. I them told her that if they would buy them at half of the ask I would bring about 1000 tomorrow. She then put the coins up and walked off.

It just really ticks me off. My cousins not the brightest candle in the box and only makes $7/hr so it took him 2 hours of hard work to pay for this piece of junk.

My question is: Is there any way to stop these crooks from doing this?

The coin looked about like the coin in this auction:

  • No way to stop them other than refusing to do business with them. They can charge whatever they want. Just look at a few of the others in our industry... HSN, QVC, Littleton.

Unless they misrepresented the coin, it's "buyer be ware".

It wouldn't be so bad if these people didn't know the value of the coin when they sold it, but they probably gave the guy who pawned it 20 cents for itimage--------BigE

It was nice of your cousin to think about you. He was probably thrilled he got you a coin. I'd leave it at that. At $15 the pawn shop probably doesn't sell enough to really make it a real part of their business. Most pawn shops I deal with have no clue about what they are doing in coins.

i'm usually in the buyers corner, but these people are just doing business. they didn't force anyone to sell them the coin for 20¢ or force anyone to buy it for $13. they didn't actively attempt to deceive anyone and only offered a product at an asking price. i would imagine they sell very few coins at these prices anyway - and none to true collectors. so the number of coins they sell is appropriate compared to the price asked.

i remember when the tail-lights on my old toyota corolla caught fire and melted. a junkyard charged me $50 for a set of tail-lights that i had to take off myself. when i junked the car about a year later, the same junkyard bought the whole car in running condition, tail-lights included, for $45. i can scream all i want about how unethical they were, but i wasn't forced to use their services.

Although I hate to read stories like this, I agree with those above that you can't blame the pawn shop for selling a coin to someone who wanted to buy it.

I think the best thing you can do is convince your cousin, your friends and neighbors and anybody else who will listen that they should avoid this shop. This truly is your most powerful way of fighting back.
