A coin is like a DNA strand no 2 are the same

A coin is like a DNA strand and no two coins have the same metallic / magnetic footprint or sound wave resonance characteristics. PCGS, NGC, ICG and ANACS will know if you resubmit the same coin for regrading, broken out of the slab or simply resubmitted. Who will guarantee the grade and by who's standards? Yours? I think not.

I've never heard of the characteristics of coins being unique to that level. What type of equipment is necessary to resolve these things and to what tolerances?
  • In 1979 a company called Photograde used to distinguish coins by their surface characteristics under one to one time magnification. Even counterfeiters in the 1800’s would take precautions to make any “duplicate” counterfeit coin a distant cousin of the master coin at least 5 generations distant under one time magnification.

  • Back in the 1920's the U.S. Secret Service maintained a library of over 2 millions coins that were known counterfeits. Many were actually produced by U.S. Mint engravers and ground level tool and die workers supplementing their incomes. Of the 2 million known copies, some were produced by foreign governments in an effort to inflate the U.S. economy. No one knows how many counterfeits went undetected during the Great Depression. Some economists suggest up to 10 times more than the amount of known counterfeit pieces. It's hard to guess since counterfeiters of the era were forced to include precious metals in their fake pieces. Costs would sometimes overrule time-counterfeiting management efficiency at times. In the late 1920’s it took more time to counterfeit coins than it was worth so most counterfeiters moved on to making fake currency or simply kidnapping people for real cash. Bank robbers in the depression era hardly ever “made” enough money to purchase gas so they resorted to stealing cars for the gas alone. A great example of how one crime leads to another. Jessie James never stole a horse. He would rob a train first to get “horse money”.

  • Dixfer, Tell us the type of equipment needed to check the metallic/ magnetic footprint or sound wave resonance characteristics that can identify each individual coin.
(And none of the drivel about photograde.)
I own a machine shop and have been involved in manufacturing for 36 years and frankly what you're saying is nonsence.

  • Hi Lath,

    In answer to your inquiry:
Tell us the type of equipment needed to check the metallic/ magnetic footprint or sound wave resonance characteristics that can identify each individual coin.

It's really low tech. A tuning fork can do that.

There are always high tech machines that can do low tech jobs though. A Low Magnetic Resonance Imager can be fit into a watch battery.

A simple ultra sound works even cheaper...but not as cheap as a tuning fork.

For your information, most traffic radar’s used by policemen and county prosecutors are calibrated with the whack of an aluminum tuning fork on the heal of a shoe.

  • People tend to think in terms of their own God -given senses but imagine when you can microwave a cup of tea or tone a coin with just 200 watts.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that 2 DNA strands are never alike - you have billions identical strands in your body....
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
  • Find two that are alike and prove it, and you are the next Nobel peace prize winner.

Why can bacteria stay dormant for 10,000 years and mutate>? Must be because even the simplest life form cannot duplicate an exact DNA strand.

  • One more thing to make lakesmammman happy. Only organic materials are comprised of DNA. Minerals and composite materials such as silver and metallic alloys do not have DNA but can be matched up with simpler methods. A great example is how the Egyptians could determine the source of all gold mined. Pretty much the same methods used to date.

A high tech example is how nuclear power was discovered and not invented. You can't invent things that have been on the Earth for millions of years. Even though Lathmath has been involved with manufacturing for 36 years.
