how do you break slabs?

Thank you for taking time to answer our questions

When you get a coin come in for a crossover how do you break the slab without damaging the coin? If you do this everyday wouldn't a coin get damaged during the crackout once and a while? Ihave tried many different ways to break slabs and have damaged a few coins in doing so. (all cheap coins)

We have a special, custom built machine...actually a high speed fine saw...that saws the four edges off of the slab. We then simply lift up the top piece of the slab and gently remove the coin.

I realize most people don't want to pay $25,000 for their own slab saw (complete with suction tubes to suck away the slab dust), so I suggest you use the method favored by most dealers. Take a big pliers and snap the corners of the slab. It will crack the plastic. You can remove part of the slab and then carefully slide the coin out. Use extreme caution...and ask around, i.e. check with other collectors and dealers to see how they do it.
