Does this date look doubled?????

I was wondering the forums opinion on this 1889 Morgan. Me and my brother were going through his coins and came across this one that appeared to have a doubled date but wanted to post a picture of it here to hopefully find out for sure. I have one pic done with the scanner the others with a digital camera.

Thanks for your time, Mike

Is there a 1 between the 1 and 8? It could be a repunched date! I'll look at my VAM book.

Well there are 21 Vams for 1889. 4 doubled ear, various repunched dates and one double wreath on the reverse. VAM 3 is the closest. It states " 1 in date doubled below upper and lower crossbar. Bottom of first 8 and 9 doubled faintly. All right stars doubled slightly towards the rim. Closed 9 variety. Date set further right than normal." Hope this helps! It maybe a new variety!

  • Actually the coin is at my brothers so I can't look at it right now but now that you said something about that 1 in between the 1 and 8, the second and third pictures do appear that way. The star to the right of the date did appear to be double slightly also. When I was looking at it under magnification that area of the coin just caught my eye the date seems to be distorted and jumbled together. I will take a closer look at it tomorrow thanks a lot for your help.

  • There is some doubling in the date but some of the denticles look doubled too so it might be machine doubling from a loose die.

    Mike921,

Your images aren't clear enough for a positive determination, but there are a couple possible varieties that have the date, or some of the numbers in the date doubled. None are significant or warrant a premium.

The 1889 Vam 14 has a doubled 1 and 9 and sometimes has a die chip between the loops of the first 8. The 9 is doubled slightly at the top outside of the upper loop and the 1 is doubled slightly at the lower right crossbar. Vam 15 has the 9 doubled at the top inside of upper loop and at right top inside of lower loop; there is slight doubling on the top inside of the lower loop of the first 8 and inside of upper loop of the 2nd 8. Vam 6 also has a doubled 9, but it is strongly doubled at top outside. And, there are still varieties to be discovered.

I'm not in a position to say this specimen does or doesn't show a RPD, but, if you are going to collect Morgan dollars and are interested in recognizing and/or attributing varieties, you may want to invest in the VAM Book.

  • I think it's something best determined under a loupe. On the first image, i can't see much, but on the second, i can see something onthe one and the eight, and on the second, i can see something on the one and the nine!! But hey, it's a coin, so it's something i would love any way.

  • Yea, I think I am going to look into getting one of those VAM books. Got a book on just about everything else but VAM's just didn't think they were so common. I was looking them up on the internet last night and list seems to go on forever. Makes me wanna go over every one of my coins with a microscopeimage That 89 Morgan probably went unnoticed because it had some crusty build up right in that area at the bottom of the hair line and around the date. It was unattractive so my brother decided to dip it which made the date more clearly visible.

Also, is die cracks a VAM? I have a couple of Morgans that appear to have these raised lines along the stars and letters.

    Thanks, for the help guysimage
