I was wondering the forums opinion on this 1889 Morgan. Me and my brother were going through his coins and came across this one that appeared to have a doubled date but wanted to post a picture of it here to hopefully find out for sure. I have one pic done with the scanner the others with a digital camera.
Thanks for your time, Mike

Your images aren't clear enough for a positive determination, but there are a couple possible varieties that have the date, or some of the numbers in the date doubled. None are significant or warrant a premium.
The 1889 Vam 14 has a doubled 1 and 9 and sometimes has a die chip between the loops of the first 8. The 9 is doubled slightly at the top outside of the upper loop and the 1 is doubled slightly at the lower right crossbar. Vam 15 has the 9 doubled at the top inside of upper loop and at right top inside of lower loop; there is slight doubling on the top inside of the lower loop of the first 8 and inside of upper loop of the 2nd 8. Vam 6 also has a doubled 9, but it is strongly doubled at top outside. And, there are still varieties to be discovered.
I'm not in a position to say this specimen does or doesn't show a RPD, but, if you are going to collect Morgan dollars and are interested in recognizing and/or attributing varieties, you may want to invest in the VAM Book.

Also, is die cracks a VAM? I have a couple of Morgans that appear to have these raised lines along the stars and letters.
Thanks, for the help guys
