  • Obviously a goof. Another note is that most of these coins are probably
Full Steps, but were graded before PCGS began using the designation.

Not only are they all FS (but not necessarily designated) but at one time they were more accurately designated "SP", such as SP69, rather than "SMS", such as SMS MS69. Of course this brings up the question of what the SP is? I've heard both "Special Proof" and "Specimen" - either one is more accurate and less confusing than calling them an SMS coin especially considering they were part of a commemerative set. image Another fine example of PCGS consistency...........

They should just call them Matte Proofs and forget the SP or SMS.

Bill I'll be going to the NYINC on Saturday only no room for me.

There is the possibility the two SMS or SP 94-P and 97-P may exist in less then the perfect 6 steps but the numbers are at a fraction or likely minute of the two mintages. I think it would be an interesting coin to locate and perhaps collect considering that these two specially made nickels were minted to be perfect representations of the Jefferson nickel design. 2-3 years back someone had written in their coin's auction description that not all the new SMS 94-P and 97-P have the 6 full steps. At the time I had 4 examples of the two dates and didn't consider then to buy the coin that was offered. So no, I haven't seen one without 6 complete steps. However, do they exist? I don't know if I would pay more for one.

    Happy Holidays to all
