This is yet another reason we must have grading services!

This dealer is either blind or dishonest.

You make the call!

Overgraded by how many points?

I would say 5 but I don't know enough about them to really just what is wear and what is die or srtike problems.
Anyway yes if it were certified it would be better for both the seller and buyer.

A very scarce coin in uncirculated grade.
If this coin is truly uncirculated it should be presented properly for maximum sale attraction and profit.
Stapled in a 2X2 does not help sell this coin and it leaves doubts of it being genuine coin to start with.

are you saying you would bid $19000 if it were slabed? i hope not. more important than the grading service is seeing such a coin IN PERSON, slabed or not. an authentication svc. would certainly be of value though.

  • From what I see he could be right on or as many as five points high. The coin is at least an AU. (Due to insurmountable resolution problems I do not believe it is possible to accurately grade coins any higher than AU from a monitor image.)

We don't need the slabbers nearly as much as we need educated collectors who get involved in finding out what things are and how to determine whether they are worth the money...needless to mention honest dealers who play above the board.

As much as I don't like sl*bs, I know certification can be important. It is easier for both parties if an expert third party renders an opinion regarding a coin's authenticity, condition, and presence or lack of problems. It bothers me when one expert opinion is raised to the level of divine law, however.

  • I don't like slabs either. But when shelling out a lump of cash it does add some protection. If and when I am willing to pony up a hunk of money for a coin, I want to see it in person.

There are several other threads about "mis-represented" auctions and what the buyer thought he was getting. Why have the hassle of a returning a high ticket item or possibly getting burned on an item? eBay and the like are great for low to mid-value items and some slabbed coins but for God's sake keep it in your pants (the wallet, that is) and buy those expensive items in person.
