You all might remember back in November I conducted a poll of every coin person who would take it. I've got a few results for ya now. There were 138 responses. Mostly from this board.
The average age was 40 3/4 years and 68% of the people who replied are between 30 and 51. The youngest person being 15 and oldest being 64. The average income for those who replied was right at the $50,000 range. with most people being between $0-$100,000. (Though there were many higher). The average number of years for a person in the hobby is 20 with 68% of the people being in the hobby between 5 and 35 years. The most common, though, was 3 years.
Of the possibilities I gave, most people collected dollar coins with half dollars being very popular. Just about every type is collected, though clearly centered around the half and dollar. There are even people collecting the $100 platinum coins (so the market does exist).
There is somewhat of a correlation between age and years in the hobby (which would seem obvious) but it is not as strong as you'd expect (r=0.467). So this indicates people joining the hobby in adulthood. There is very little correlation between age and denomination collected. It was 0.1 which is basically saying it's a free for all.
Here is the distribution in ages (each age is <= age)
Ages - Frequency
15 - 2
20 - 4
25 - 8
30 - 11
35 - 13
40 - 22
45 - 33
50 - 25
55 - 11
60 - 8
65 - 1
Here is how many years people were in the hobby (again, years is <=)
Years - Frequency
5 - 40
10 - 11
15 - 10
20 - 14
25 - 12
30 - 9
35 - 19
40 - 13
45 - 4
50 - 5
55 - 0
60 - 0
65 - 1
That's all for now. I may come up with some more stats later. I thought you all would be interested to see what happened to it.

just more fuel for the fire of anyone wanting to prove me as average. i end up right in the middle at age 47 and collecting for 38 years. the only miss, sadly for me, is that my income is below average at about $30K. but i manage to make it stretch and cover cost whenever i can!!!! as a freind tells me, always buy the keys in the highest grade you can afford, you won't go wrong.
