50 State Quarters Clad v.s. PR

Being new to collecting,I would like to know why there are two classes of proof coins in these issues that being clad and proof .

  • Do not know if I can answer your question, but her goes. When the US Mint issues the Proof sets, they come in a Clad version (around May of each year) and the Silver version (around September of each year) for each year. The Roosevelt, Statehood Quarters and the Kennedy come in both the Clad and Silver versions. Hope this helps.

    dram:

    There are two possible answers:
    1) The kind answer is that the mint is striving to meet the demands of its customers, the collectors that buy from it.
    2) The less kind answer is that the mint is striving to separate cash from the hands of its customers, the collectors that buy from it.

Personally, even though I buy silver as well as clad proofs from the mint, I think that answer #2 is probably closer to the truth.

  • Others could speak to this matter better than I but I thought the reason for both the Clad and Silver is because the US Congress passed legislation (sorry about the spelling) for both of them. Thus the US Mint has to make both.

  • T hat being the case is it possible to buy rolls of clad state quarters with the s mint mark
  • Yes - but only through third party companies. The US Mint will only sell the 10 coin set.

  • I have only been able to find P and D mint rolls does anybody have any idea where one could find these rolls of s mint mark clad coins
  • The only problem with that is that typically the coins are rejects from the grading service. None will grade higher that PR68 DCAM. We do put the coins into rolls but only to submit to the grading services. I know of some people who might have some rolls, but can not guarantee that the coins are unsearched.

  • Then silver sets are clad coins, mint proof sets are clad ,and then there are silver proof sets, I think I figured this out so the only way to get a roll is to bust the proof set up and get rolls of cllad coins thanks all .
  • "Then silver sets are clad coins..."

Just a slight correction here. The clad proof sets are copper nickel and contain no silver. The silver proof sets are a separate issue from the mint and come out later in the year. Hope this helps. image
  • that was a typo, so the sets in the blue box are they clad coins and the sets in the red boxes i know they aresilver
  • You've got it! That is, until the mint decides to change the packaging. image
