NGC Photo Proof

Anyone ever used this service? What do you think of the images? If the slab is scratched up, do you have to have it reslabbed first, or are they able to "avoid" them showing up? Are submission requirements the same as submitting coins for grading?

  • If it is a toned coin I hear they do not reproduce colors very well, especially green and red.

I have 5 or 6 photo proofs and quite frankly I don't care for the images. They are superbly sharp, but it's as if the lighting has burned thru the "life" of the coin in order to enhance the design. I think they need to change their process to emphasize catching the flash and color of the individual coin rather than to show the design to the fullest extent.

Many of the images shown on this forum do exactly that!
  • What are the copyright dates on your Photoproofs? I know of two different varieties, One copyrighted 1993 and the other 1997. Does NGC still do photoproofs? I haven't checked.

NGC still offers this service (two levels- one of them being a premium service).

Remember PCGS also offered this under a different name. When did they stop?

I have two at the office - one is copyright 1997 and the other 2000.
  • Do they both look the same in general layout? Is this what the front cover looks like?

The PCGS version was called PCGS Profile.

I've only seen it with mated pairs... that is when i think it is really needed.

Conder: Same layout - it's got my old 1884 on the front!

I've got one of the old PCGS Profiles around somewhere, too.

I had 2 photo proofs done. One coin was a whitish original coin
that showed perfectly in the photo. I love it. The other piece was a deeply toned coin with great luster under the toning. The photo could not duplicate the vibrant colors and they came out looking a light golden brown like the coin was burnished and pickled. You can't really tell it's the same coin. Looks like hell. So I can vouch for what TDN stated.

Well, sounds like I would be wasting money. Thanks. I'll keep my thirty five bucks (Photo proof deluxe - four images: obv, rev and two close-ups of attributions).

  • I also have several photo proofs. Toned coins do not fare as well, and colors do not show up as well as the same pieces in most auction catalogs..

I wish, however that B and M would have followed through on the concept of photos and posters of the Eliasberg coins as it was discussed in the catalogs

Do we think there would be enough interest in the community?
