Wash Quarter Guys: Here We Go Again!!

Lot 1228 in the Teletrade sale tonight: A 1949(d) Wash Quarter in NGC-MS68 (this one doesn't even have the *) - presently at $13,200!! 4 hours to go. The nicest toned PCGS-MS67 1949(d) quarters I have ever seen commanded less than $2500 (a couple well under that price). If I owned a pretty toned 1949(d) PCGS-MS67 quarter right now (which I believe I do), TO ME it MIGHT be "worth" 2x what it was worth yesterday as a result of this price level on the NGC coin (assuming it sells). These price levels on the NGC coins are amazing, considering a typical price on a coin like this may have been around $2500 - $3500 a year ago IMHO.

$19,250 for the 1948(s) NGC-MS68* quarter last month and now $13,200 (or more) for the 1949(d) quarter in NGC-MS68 (no star). What is going on here?

The opening bid is chosen by TT. There's really no way of telling if any of the bids are real or just flimflammery executed by TT to establish a price for the next time it appears. They could even be doing this on behalf of the owner.

I should never have given up on this set though.

Someone should start a poll. Do you think this is to establish a price for a future appearance. Or is it the real thing? Remember what Wondercoin said. And this is an NGC coin, for plastic buyers.

    "Remember what Wondercoin said. "

I'm not sure what I am saying - I am not sure what exactly has happened to Wash quarter prices in the past 120 days, or why it has happened. The NGC-MS68 coin is now at $14,300. A nice NGC-MS67 coin of this date used to be a couple hundred dollars (even call it $400). You are looking at upwards of a 35x jump between grades now for the NGC coin. Are there really that many "advanced" collectors competing at this time for these MS68 coins at $14,000-$20,000/coin? Fascinating. Wondercoin. image

I just hope this quarter is better looking in person than in the photo. Doesn't appeal to me at all.

I was just thinking the same same thing, Mike. Looks like somebody flipped cigar ashes on it.

  • Last I checked it was at $16,000 plus the juice!!!!!!!

  • Holy pop top mania Bat Man.

That Washington has some pretty crappy eye appeal for a five figure coin. I can think of at least 100 things right off the top of my head that I would rather purchase than that coin for the money.

The reward to the winner of this beauty will be a really great piece of plastic.

    Man, I am crabby today.image

Sorry if I offended anyone who actually likes the coin.
  • Looking for a bargain on an MS68? Reserve is about 3% of the cost of the 49d. LINKimage
  • Okay, so when will this craziness spill over to the PROOF color Washingtons?? cheers, alan mendelson

Frankly, the 49D coin did not look very good at all. I like the 57 ANACS piece though.

Wow.. that is truly amazing. $16k!! I dont care for the coin much either. Although I do like em white... I have come to aprreciate some nicely toned, lustrous, well struck Washingtons. This one however, I just dont get.. certainly not for me. Cant be buying the plastic either. can they?

Guess I will hold my NGC MS67's just in case they rise much mor ein line with PCGS prices (which they have been doing).

    Fascinating to say the least!!

We'll see if the coin "sticks". I sure hope COINGAME2000 is not reading this thread

  • White washingtons are great, but 16K image ...it wasn't too pretty in my eyes...but then again thats my tastes...
  • Yikes... hope it's prettier than the picture looks on my monitor. The reverse color/pattern looks pretty nice but the obverse seems average at best.

I like that coin/price about as much as a $4000 hazy "PR70" Ike. image

Looks like the cost of NGC plastic is approaching PCGS plastic.image

Knowing PCGS is tougher than NGC, wouldn't it seem reasonable that someone would take a solid (very PQ) 48-D PCGS MS67 and try to get it in an NGC MS68 holder? At this price I certainly would. A few times!
    Dan
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
Dam, the problem with your logic is that the crossover rate from PCGS to NGC is about the same as the reverse, so you have a one in five chance to cross. Of course you could crack it out and take an enormous risk that it won't find its way back into a 68 holder at either service.
  • DAMDAM Posts: 2,410 ✭✭
    Mike,

In my reply I assumed a PQ (hate that term. but for description purposes, it fits well here image ) coin. Under that assumption, let's say we break it out. Because we know it will grade MS67 again.

As soon as I find a nice one, I'll give it a try. image

Soon I hope. I just sent off a wild neon rainbow toned '64 to PCGS.image

    Russ, NCNE
  • Russ: please tell more about your "64 neon." Im especially interested in the colors and what you believe to be the source or cause of the color toning? thanks and cheers, alan mendelson
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    Alan,

I have no idea what the source of the colors was. I picked up the set at a show last weekend, still sealed in the mint celo, and all the coins but the cent were toned. The silvers are wild, and the nickel more subdued. Here's the quarter:

    image

The coin has even more different colors than show in the scan. Because of the reflective surfaces, it's very difficult to capture the entire spectrum.

    Russ, NCNE
  • Russ: awesome and congratulations. Please let us know how it's graded, and if you ever decide to sell -- offer it to me first !!! cheers, alan mendelson
  • Okay, I'm a bit bewildered. I read AKrick's post and looked at the link and even placed a bid myself:

Rainbow Color Toned ANACS 1957D MS68 Monster!
    Item # 3300362398

So, is this another coin that will reach the lofty five-figures? It certainly has eye appeal. But the bidding to this point has been weak.

    cheers, alan mendelson

Just noticed this thread on the forum since I may go for days w/o logging onto computer.

These five figure prices are totally insane. Moon money was bypassed light years ago. Now,
we are talking about INTERGALACTIC MOOLAH. There are so many other coins to buy with the
same amount of money that are actually good value. Oh well, what else is new?

I will say this is fun to watch and I'm trying to position myself to take advantage of this mania.
It simply is a matter of getting the right coin in the right holder and tossing this bait to hungry
    fish.

    Regards. Cupronik.

OK. I bit and bid the ANACS MS68. Guess what, I cleared the reserveimage. Hey, the coin looks wonderful. If I get it great, if someone bids over me that's OK as well. Russ, I love your neon proof.

I doubt that it will ever reach 4 figures, much less 5 figures. I wasn't sure it was going to even reach the reserve, which was revealed here.

The problem with this coin is that ANACS is well known to give very lofty grades to mint set coins with nice toning. Finding MS68 quarters in ANACS slabs isn't difficult. My 2 year old ANACS pop report shows 17 in MS68 (3 for this date). That number might very well have doubled or tripled in the past two years.

I've seen ANACS MS68 dimes and quarters that had very nice toning that would only make MS66 at PCGS/NGC.

I'm sure many of the bidders are thinking "if this coin were a true MS68, then why isn't it in a PCGS/NGC slab and with a $20,000 price tag?".

Having said that, I've strongly considered bidding on this coin because the toning looks stunning. It also looks mark free.
  • Greg wrote: I've seen ANACS MS68 dimes and quarters that had very nice toning that would only make MS66 at PCGS/NGC.

Let me take this to the next logical step: would these super pricey NGC high grade quarters cross over to PCGS ms68 slabs? I doubt it. therefore, can we believe that the high prices for these coins is in the plastic and not in the coin?

    cheers, alan mendelson

would these super pricey NGC high grade quarters cross over to PCGS ms68 slabs? I doubt it.

    I doubt it too.

However, lets take that one step further. Would a coin that is MS68.0 by PCGS standards grade MS68 by them now? I doubt it. Would one that graded MS68.3 by their standards grade MS68 by them now? Doubt it again.

Given the insane prices paid for these coins, it better be an MS68.5+++ to get into a PCGS slab at MS68.

It's very possible that these NGC coins are of equal quality to those coins already in PCGS MS68 slabs? Whether or not you could get these ones into a PCGS slab is another matter.

I don't know the current price of a PCGS MS68 Washington, so I can't say whether the NGC ones were that much different in price. Last I heard they were $5,000-$10,000 coins. Obviously that has changed.
