Who are the good dealers/online sellers?

Hi! I've read a lot about dealers who are less than creditable on this message board. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing past experiences with bad dealers/online sellers; however, I'd like to hear some success stories. Who are the dealers you recommend? Why (price, service, honesty)?

Use this as an opportunity to bring balance to the rule of ten.

Cheers and Happy Holidays!

Hi. I like Heritage, Whitlow, and D. Lawrence. For me great coins and sevice. Price was ok but not all that important to me. Nice coins cost more.
  • Stay away from Heritage, low end crap. The others are good

I have been amazed at the quality of the classic commems I`ve bought from Heritage. Been very happy with them.

Well I`ve collected them on and off for 34 years. Hung out with guys that wrote books on them during the 70`s. You should be more friendly, 007.

  • Heritage is known for low end crap. I've had first hand experience as well as hearing it from others. You are obviously an expert and much smarter than I am to sift through all their crap and find the jewels. How was that?

Not an expert but I know nice appealing commems. I would never tell anyone they should get out more. Just my opinion of Heritage and you.

I made my latest purchases from Coinguy (Pinnacle) and was very happy. Mark, do you think you could drop the price a little more on that commem. now?------BigE

Lately Heritage has gotten some negative feedback around here..... I personally have never used them but from some of the post I have read it seems to be a crap shoot with them. Where as David Lawerence, I can't recall ever reading a bad thing about this firm.... And these guys have also sold me a nice Frankie or three.

  • Mommam17 --Thanks for letting me know about Whitlow Ltd. I just surfed their website and found some really nice early commemoratives. Concerning Heritage, I've purchased two coins from them and have been very satisfied with the coins. The majority of my collection has been from David Lawrence.

I have gotten great stuff and crummy stuff from Heritage. Like most places, you have to look at the coin. I have never had a problem returning a coin. I don't think they disclose a coins shortcomings as well as Bowers and Merena. I have sold them some stuff for a pretty decent price.
People are probably getting tired of me saying this, but I like Angel Dees (Andy Skrabalak). I have both sold and purchased from Angel Dees, and have been very satisfied on both accounts. Andy pays good prices for coins. Sometimes people don't understand that he can't always come down very much on a price because he is making very little to begin with. I know this because I have seen the coins I sold him in his cases and what they are priced at. You won't find a fairer dealer in my honest opinion.
I would also recommend Mark Feld of Pinnacle. You will get a completely honest opinion from Mark. I have dealt with him personally and have nothing but good to say about the man. Plus he is a coin grader extroidinaire!!!. Mark Woods

I only buy MS 65 or 66 classic commems so it`s not hard to sift through anyone`s inventory to find something that will make me happy.

    Heath,

Here are a few dealers that I personally like:

    Whitlow--www.whitlow.com--Mike Printz
    Pinnacle--www.pinnacle-rarities.com--Mark Feld
    Legend--www.Legendcoin.com--Laura Sperber
    US Coin--www.buyuscoins.com--Bonnie Sable
Rare Coins of New Hampshire--www.rare-coins.com--Jon Rosenthal

These are a few that I like to deal with for a mixture of reasons, price, quality, and customer service. You gotta remember one thing....you usually get what you pay for.image I know I have left out some so I sure others will add a few for you!

There are other individual dealers/collectors that I enjoy doing business with that deal in what I primarily look for. That's part of the "fun" that comes with the hobby!

    Edited to correct web address!image

I've been collecting for over 20 years. All of the mentioned dealers have good material. There are some that just don't fit in some collections.Pinnacle,Whitlow,Legend,David LawrenceCameo CC,MMnM,Angel Dees and yes Heritage do have good coins. Some are pricey.I trust all of them, with the exception of Heritage.I don't say that their descriptions are false, just not as accurate. The board members from these dealers are some of the best in numismatics. There expertise is beyond question.IMHO They have helped put together some of the finest collections in recent years(15 yrs).

    ditto!

I have bought a few lots from Jon and they have always been better than described. Terrific service as well.

  • I vote for David Lawerence too. I haven`t dealt with Pinnacle Rarities and Mark posts here and he`s a good one to talk with. Honest and has quality coins. Bowers & Merena Galleries are a good one and the prices are a little high but they sell good quality coins. Harry Laibstain Rare Coins I`ve dealt with once without a hitch and they where fast with shipping out my order.
  • Yes, I prefer David Lawrence; however, I have to pay sales tax on all my orders. Thus, I'm looking for dealers who measure up to what I've come to expect from a dealer, without the sales tax.

Heritage is hard to beat. Nice material, decent prices. No one else has the inventory they do. David Lawrence is great as well.

i sure have, made the mistake once of bidding sight-unseen in an on-line auction, about 3 years ago. would never do it again. now, i only bid if i had a chance to see their coins in person. their digi-pics are amazingly awful. make some terrible coins look terrific in images, some gems look terrible in the images. got nailed w/ what amounted to a 9% restocking charge when i returned some crap that looked way better in the digipics.

just a warning - if you've had nothing but good experiences w/ heritage, then great for you.
