Commemorative experts. Opinions please.

Bought 6 commemoratives this weekend. I'd like to post three now and three later. I would surely welcome your opinions on the quality and grading of these coins.

Thanks
Ogden

Obviously it is extremely difficult to grade by a scan, but here is what I would guess.

Bay Bridge: MS63-MS64 - Looks like a few hits on the bear.
Maine: MS60 cleaned - Looks like it's hairlined.
Pilgrim: MS60 cleaned - Looks like no luster.

Ogden, I agree with gmarguli that the first one is a nice coin and the second two do look to show signs of cleaning. mike
  • That doesn't sound good to me! I hope not. I better get back to my dealer and get some type of guarantee to refund my money if they are cleaned.

It might be the scans. It's hard to tell without seeing them in person. Show them to another dealer for an opinion.

Greg is so right about scans. It`s so hard to tell. I was wondering if you could tell us what you paid? I recommend buying slabs. You get a guaranty and that eliminates the risk but doesn`t mean you will get nice eye appealing coins.

Agreed. My first three thoughts were:
1- Dark scan, but the Bay Bridge rev. is nice - low 60s.
2- The other two - cleaned AUs.
3- But it could be the scans.
I hope they are nice to the naked eye. image
  • Both coins were listed at my dealers in Charleston as Gem BU! They are the only dealer in Charleston.
I'm going to talk to the dealer tomorrow, to see if they will agree to refund my money after submission to PCGS is they have been cleaned. They are signing up with PCGS Monday for the first time as a dealer. I would hope that they would agree to reimburse me if they list a coin as GEM BU and it comes back cleaned. Does anybody agree with this? I don't know why I keep trusting people!!!!

Hello Ogden, could you post some close uo pictures of the maine obverse- the top third of the coin? This is the coin that looks to have the strongest hairlines. If you have a hard time taking close up pictures PM me and I will tell you my tricks. mike
  • Hi darktone, give me some time and I will take a closer photo. The coin looks great, but I'm worried after reading all the comments.

True gems would be about a grand to $1200. Hope things work out for you. I think the Bay Bridge is a 63 and the 2 would come back in body bags. But like everyone else it`s hard to tell.

I don't think you can tell that those commems. have been cleaned from the scans. We all know that at least 50% of all commems. have been dipped. Let the man submit them and find out for himself------------------------BigE

I thought he wanted our opinion on grading and quality.
  • More scans on the Maine.

  • Darktone, and others, I don't see the hairlines on the Maine like I do on the Pilgrim. The maine is actually hairline free. I really do appreciate all who have responded. It probably saved me some money as I'm going to discuss the PIlgrim with my dealer. I hope for the $130.00 I paid he doesn't want to lose my business if the Pilgrim is cleaned. Thanks to all.

Ogden, the yellow circled area is the part that caught my eye. Can you take a close up of this area? mikeimage
  • darktone, thanks for your interest. Hopefully you won't mind if I publish later. The grands are here and man I'm tired!!!

  • Darktone, I uploaded the close ups of the coin you mentioned. Let me know if you will.

  • The results are in:

The Bay Bridge was graded MS-64 and the Pilgrim was MS-63.

I still think I did OK as I paid $130.00 for the Pilgrim and $100.00 for the Bay Bridge.
Some of you were right on the grades.

Thanks for providing a link to this thread in this thread. I wouldn't have been able to find it otherwise. imageimageimage
