Jones hoarding ball -- to Heat's delight

Heat forward Eddie Jones vows to become more selfish.
And his teammates are hoping Jones keeps his promise.
Two days after he scored a season-high 33 points in a loss to the Memphis Grizzles, Jones realized that the best way to help the Heat is for him to shoot first -- and maybe even second -- and then pass.
''I think they'll deal with it if I put up 30 shots,'' he said Thursday.
Jones, averaging a team-high 15.6 points going into tonight's game against the New York Knicks at AmericanAirlines Arena, said his nature is to be unselfish. He often limits his shots because he wants his teammates to know he has faith in their talent.
'Sometimes as a player, you look at yourself during the game and say, `I might be taking a little too many shots,' '' Jones said. ' `Let me pass the ball some.' ''
He has been passing some -- perhaps too much, teammates say. Jones leads the Heat in assists (3.7 per game), and he has looked to pass more because the Heat point guards have struggled.
But what started out as mere passing turned into a less-aggressive Jones. In the three games before his offensive burst against the Grizzlies, Jones scored a combined 12 points.
''But I think the last game kind of worked for me in the standpoint that even when I saw the double-team coming, I tried to beat it,'' Jones said.
While the Heat lost its fourth consecutive game 107-96 and fell to 5-16 overall, Jones' teammates were happy with his performance.
''He's here to shoot,'' forward Brian Grant said. ``Other guys will get theirs in other areas.''
Jones knows his teammates want him to shoot more. They tell him so. During Tuesday's game, Jones said Grant and others encouraged him to keep shooting. Still, Jones has to fight the temptation to pass.
''Sometimes, I can't help but set my teammates up,'' he said.
will we be seeing the same eddie jones that started the 99 00 all star game alongside a.i. from here on? the one who led the league in steals w/ nearly 3 a game in 99?
