Get one that is certified. Fakes abound.

  • I certainly like this one better, but is the price right?

    1909-S VDB MS65

    or this one:

    1090-S VDB Raw AU?

I really don't want to buy a raw key date coin.

    Lastly:

    PCGS 1909-S VDB

I agree - a few certified ones above.

Impossible to tell for sure whether it's real, but if so, I see a VF30-EF40 depending on the presence and strength of wheat lines...can't see them, the image is too dark.

The darkness running vertically around the first half of LIBERTY also concerns me. Looks like it could be a planchet flaw, which could keep it out of a PCGS holder (which could be why it's not in one already).

I would pass on any 09S VDB offered online except from a high-quality reputable dealer. Ebay is certainly not the place to shop for one, in my opinion.

I'm not sure I like NGCs grading of uncirculated cents all that much...They tend to be at least a point high, if not more. I wouldn't give above 64 money for any NGC65 without being able to inspect it closely.

  • Found this one without a photo from a dealer I have done business with on IHC's. Send me a photo!

PCGS AU-53 Old green holder, would grade 58 but for a small reverse scratch.

    CD:

Can you give me some idea of what these price points are? 58, 63, 65?

  • I would not, under any circumstances, consider this coin unless certified by pcgs, ngc, or anacs. this coin would be certified unless there was a problem. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY!!!

A couple of different resources, other than the CDN, for a decent idea...

First, the PCGS price guide is relatively accurate, and includes all the grades you mention.

Second, I'd like to take you to my site to do a search of completed online auctions for 1909S VDB cents. Go here, enter 1909 and punch on "S" and you'll get 79 results from the past two months.

That's about the best advice I can give, I haven't really been up on the 09S VDB pricing lately....can't afford one.

That is one impressive system you have put together. I will surely spend the better part of tomorrow reviewing IHC prices, as this is another project of mine.

Thank you very much for doing that work and directing me to it.

    Frank,

Thanks for the kudos - I aim to please. I do have all the data for the past 30 days that I intend on adding to the database sometime before Monday evening, which will make for more results for each date. Remember though that this information is from one source only and shouldn't be used to make any concrete "plans" based on the prices derived. In other words, it's not a completely reliable source to be used alone - a lot of factors are missing to make it a reliable price guide....with that being said, it's at least ONE source a person can use for preliminary infomation in making a final judgement on how much they should spend for a cent.

If you are going to buy one raw make sure you trust the seller. In this case, Apache coin is a good, knowledgeable seller who would know the difference between a counterfeit/altered 90-S VDB and a real one.
The one offered looks good and will probably go for a bit less than one already holdered (another consideration).
