1887-P $1 in GSA holder

Interesting; GSAGUY, have you seen this before and do you have a ballpark figure as to how many of these were sold off?

  • Yes because it's not a Carson City. Until now, I hadn't seen any non-CC dollars in GSA holders.

    Hughesm1,

The GSA sold a total of 27,980 non-CC dollars in the GSA hardpacks for a minimum bid of $5.00 each. Unfortunately, no formal records were kept as to the actual dates and mintmarks sold.

Published data by Van Allen and Mallis lists a number of dates/mintmarks they believed to be in the sale. To some extent, their data is accurate but is by no means complete.

I remain in close contact with a number of dedicated collectors of these coins and the more advanced collections tend to have about 16 different dates and mintmarks. My personal collection consists of 26 different dates and mintmarks....but then, I've been collecting them for almost 20 years.

The 1887-P is one of the more commonly encountered non-CC GSA dollars along with the 83-O, 84-O, 85-O and a few early S-mints.

    Hope this helps!

    gsaguy,

Just for clarification, do you mean 16 and 26 different dates WITH mintmarks, or 16 and 26 different dates with ALL mintmarks included? I guess the possibilities are:

    13 CCs ('78, '79, '80, '81, '82, '83, '84, '85, '89, '90, '91, '92, '93)

    4 Ss ('79, '80, '81, '82)

    2 Ps ('83, '85)

    4 Os ('83, '84, '85, '87)

    2 Peace ('22P, '23P)

That totals 25. What am I missing? What are the 16 others generally have? I was going to ask if you had the 3 toughies ('89CC, '92CC, "93CC), but if you have 26 dates, I guess you do, in addition to whichever one I haven't accounted for.

  • There were also quite a few GSA soft-packs sold as well the hard-packs. These too included coins with mintmarks other than CC and aslo included coins that were circulated. Not all GSA packaged coins were UNC.

    Gilbert,

Good question, and sorry for the confusion. Let me clarify.

First, when I say non-CC GSA dollars, I mean that I'm excluding all coins from the Carson City mint. Those are in a different category altogether.

For the record, the GSA claims that only one of the 1889-CC, 1892-CC and 1893-CC were included in their sales of HARDPACK coins. All other dates were sold in varying quantities.

When I say 26 dates/mintmarks of non-CC coins are in my collection, I'm counting the 1879-P and the 1879-S as two different dates/mintmarks. In other words, there are multiple dates that are represented by more than one mintmark, P, O or S.

Hope this clarifies it a bit.

    Thanks,

    GSAGUY
