The next best thing to owning a finest known is the sharing by someone who does. Forum member Lakesammman donated these close-up images of his 1888/7 S1 Indian cent to the Fly-In club's website today and anyone who appreciates this subtle overdate has to love his close-up of the 8.
This is a tough coin to warm up to. It ranks in the top two of all IH varieties but most examples require intense magnification to see traces of the underdate, and even then you usually only get the lower nub of the 7 as gratification. Lakesammman's micro close-up not only shows the upper left serif of the 7 above the 8 and remnants of it in the loop, but also clearly shows the vertical stroke in the cleavage where the loops of the 8 meet. Larry Steve doesn't even mention that trait in his F.IND.ERS Report, and this may be the best image of it to date.

and it was way tough to tell the overdate.

While this coin is a beautifull proof like example, sure would be fun to see the 65R speciman (that Sam Lukes writes about but no one I know has ever seen). Of course, if it were in a NGC holder, it would never cross.......
