What MS grade causes a "Yippy" out of you?

My personal choice would be MS-65. Seems that there is a large jump in price from 64 to 65. For some reason I just feel better with the MS-65. In my opinion MS-65 is the start of great. MS 64, although good doesn't command the same respect or shall I say glee! My opinon only.

  • ms-64 if you keep your eyes open you can find great coins that look like 65's but the price is usually less than half of what a 65 is.

For any coin: MS-66 or higher. For coins older than 1965, MS-65 and higher. For coins older than 1878, anything higher than what I think! image

Any coin that I submit as an MSXX and is come back a MSXX+1!!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • It use to be 67. But now after looking alot harder and more experience a 66.
  • a ms67 morgan gets my blood flowing and a ms68 just puts me into the howamIgonnapayforthispiece feeling (mainly jitters when I see a nice 68)
  • I think what I'm trying to ask is....At what MS grade does a coin start to command "high respect"?

I suppose that would all depend on the series. A Franklin is a 64 is pretty ho-hum, but if a Barber grades out at 64 I'd be in hog heaven. It depends on the year within a series, as well. An 189x Indian cent in a 64 is ok, but I'd be really happy if an 1861 Indian came back as a 64. I'll take an MS64 Draped Bust dollar over an MS64 Ike dollar any day of the week!

MS66 all the way. I've been looking at Buffalos recently and MS65's are very nice, but 66's have explosive luster, full strike elements, imperceivable contact marks without magnification. Wowser.

Saints are the same way. 65's don't get me excited. 66's on the other hand...

Thats true.It all depends on what the coin is.For me I think for moderns its 66.That grade ususally means PQ
overall. To me thats the starting point for great coins to collect.Or for Classics,53-64 are excellent grades to start at for Classics.Commems..I can see 69 as your ideal grade.A 68 being like junk silver, and a 70 being
your centerpiece. Not much wiggle room in commem grades.image

Do you know how rare draped bust large cents are in MS-66!! I'd be saying "yippy" for an XF coin. For most coins, I'd say I'd be very happy with a MS-63, but I don't collect 20th or 21st century coins.

MS-whatever is the "money grade". Personally, I like the look os most coins when they hit MS66. Below that there are too many marks.
  • MS67RD and depending on the coin MS66RD.
