Mastro's 1952 Set

Hey All,
I was wondering what you think of the final price on Mastro 1952 Topps set closing at $240,000.

Do you think it sold for too little, too much or just about the right price?

Do you think this says anything about high grade complete sets?

Thanks,

Carlo

Just about right--no surpise to me--pretty close to smr. Smr is high for va lot of the mid-series commons and even the pop 10 or so psa 8s Wehmeier, Crandall,Maxwell etc.) seem a bit overpriced vs. smr in today's environment.

  • Davalillo,

I guess you weren't able to pick the set up so you could finish your set ?

I think I needed 80 or so cards to finish it in 8 or better. Another guy stepped up for an additional 100 but I could not find anyone to take the rest and it was too many for me to take the risk of reselling.

My guess is that the buyer will break it up and net a nice profit.

For what it's worth, the SMR is $267,340. I don't think that's a steal in today's climate. In July 2001 the SMR was $317,280 for the same set. My understanding of the set SMR price is that it's the exact sum of the SMR of the individual cards. The other factor is really how nice the 8's are. Were the key cards high end 8's or just 8's with no qualifiers?

My guess is that it was a collector who bought it. Very few dealers have that much cash on hand and I know a bank wouldn't loan someone that amount on that tight of a profit margin (assuming they sold the cards for SMR on the average).

I agree with Dude on both points. I do not believe that a dealer could break this and turn a worthwhile profit. I would also question how many dealers would take that risk. Likely the buyer is a wealthy collector.

Does the $240,000 include the buyer's premium?
