Peace Experts - 28-S Mint Marks

I just picked up a nice toned 28-S and was reading in Highfill's book about the differences between large and small varieties. According to the author the large mintmark is far more rare and I would expect more $$$. Does anyone know how to tell the difference? And is there still a price difference? If so, what's the premium for the larger mintmark type?

Thanks for your help,

Michael

I would imagine a great difference if you find one.
Only the micro "s" was supposed to be used for all peace dollars. So if you have any other "s" mint peace dollars compare them.

I am no expert I just looked at the vamlink site they have peace dollar listings as well as morgans.

I think I may have lucked out. The S on the 28 is much fatter and thicker on the whole then the other S on my 22, 23 and 35. It just looks different under 10X microscope.

The middle of the S is much fatter and thicker as well.

I wonder if there's a price difference and whether or not NGC will designate the variety?

Anyone else have any other advice?

  • It is my understanding in the newly released VAM book on Peace Dollars is that there is doubling on the date on certain issues of the 28-S. Very distinct.image
  • Micheal,

If you have time, why don't you post a scan of the item so maybe we all can see. (Plus I would love to check out your toned dollars especially a 28-S).

    Michael,

I don't have the book that you reference and after doing a little searching I also can only find that the micro "s" was used for this date. There is mention of the micro "s" being "medium high" for this date and also some doubling of the Motto.

I also have heard of a new Peace VAM book out and will be looking for it at FUN. If you should happen to find out more please post it here......would be interested myself.

In Highfill's book, he does note a large S as being much rarer then the micro S. He states that the middle of the S is much fatter then the micro S.

Without pics, it's hard to tell, but I'm wondering if this coin may be the large S.

And if so, is it worth more then the micro S?

Anyone have or know where I can find pics of the different mintmarks?

    Thanks for the help.

This may have little to nothing to do with the subject at hand, but in the Lincoln cents there also exists a large and small mint mark for 1928S. The ratio, as studied in the 1950s was approximately 1:40 large to small, making the large mint mark quite a find. I, on the other hand, have found their numbers to be more or less equal in the hundred or so coins I have seen.

Good luck finding out the info regarding the peace dollars!
