Well, I remembered people saying to exercise caution when lauding Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Ilya Kovalchuk, Mario Lemieux, Alfonso Soriano, Ken Griffey Jr. (well somebody could make a counterpoint here but still he'll almost definitely make Cooperstown) and Peyton Manning as phenoms, so there are two sides to the story
Kobe Who? At least Dwyane pays proper respect to Da Big Aristotle
More bad than good. For every phenom that makes it, there are about 50 that don't. Sometimes the hype is too much to live up to. Let's see...
Darius Miles for example:
2000-01 SP Authentic 93 Darius Miles AU/500 $100.00 $200.00
He averaged 9.4 ppg in 00-01, 9.4 ppg in 01-02, and 12.2 ppg this season. Definately doesn't justify the $200 RC. At one time, wasn't this card at $500? People expect tooo much out of these young players and it is very rare that any of them live up to the extreme hype.
What about Baskerville Holmes? Len Bias? Joe Smith? Yatil Green?
Chris Washburn lives in NC, he is almost poo, he is overweight and is trying to get his big break in professional wresting. He also has such a gap in his teeth that he could brush them with a car battery.
I didn't post this to say that I think Lebron James will be a big flop, I'm just saying no phenom is ever 100%, and sometimes we tend to forget the washouts while rushing on to the next big thing. I remember when Felipe Lopez was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's college basketball preview as an incoming freshman, and they already had the scouts talking about what very little aspects of his game he'd tweak for one year before becoming a top 5 pick. Didn't quite work that way.
If there was anyone that was 100% lock right out of the draft to be a star (Shaq, Lemieux, Ming) then Lebron James is one of them. This guy is simply amazing and does everything with such ease. He reminds me of Magic Johnson with his nifty passes...but then the guy can jump out of the gym, jam on anyone.....simply put, one of the best picks in years....have you ever seen so man GM's drooling at once?
You think Ming was a lock to come out of the draft a star? Are you nuts? Many people looked at him as another stall stick figure who would get pounded like Bradley and anyone else who is that tall and that skinny. And what makes you think he is a star now? Cause he had a few good games? Heck if we want to make that assumtion lets say Tony Fisher of the Packers is now a star. He ran for like 91 yards in the second half a couple weeks ago on minimal carries and then last week racked up over 100 yards total passing and receiving and averaged I think 4 yards a run. Playing 2 good games in a 16 game season is about the equivelant of Yao having 10 good games in a NBA season. No player who has a good first start is automatically a star. Lets see Yao Ming for a couple yeards before we declare him an official star. Anything but a sure lock

I think it will be very interesting to see how many teams will want to try to finish last this season, just so they can have a better odds at getting the #1 pick next year.

Actually they should be fighting to NOT be the worst team. The worst team in the NBA has not won the #1 pick since 1990, and that was Coleman for the Hornets *ick*. So I'd be fighting to stya out of the worst spot. Try to finish 2nd or 3rd worst

Coleman was drafted #1 overall by the Nets, followed by Gary Payton (now THERE'S an ugh!). The Hornets had the #1 pick the following year, when they took Larry Johnson.
I believe Cleveland and Denver tried to start the process of tanking even before the season started, dealing away their little established talent for draft picks or young, unestablished talent. Why else would Cleveland give away Lamond Murrey, a decent mid-range player, for Michael Stewart, who all scouts agree is next to worthless? Murrey has some scoring ability and might mean a few more worthless wins over bad teams, and a better shot at Lebron James. Same deal, obviously, with Antonio McDyess (although that was a steal for the Nuggets no matter how you slice it) and Andre Miller.

This is sad. Chris Washburn was the third pick in the draft and he only has 1 card (1987-88 Hawks Pizza Hut Chris Washburn #13).
