It just seems too good to be true. If the seller had a reserve of $20,000 to protect themself I would not think too much but no reserve and a current bid of $300 makes me wonder if it's a fake or the seller just has faith that someone will bid it to it's value.
It does look questionable when comparing it to the photo of this type in the Red Book. Look from the tip of the nose to the top of the headband/topmost curl. This one looks nearly straight v. the Red Book photo showing a longer forecurl and a greater curve starting at the base of the headband. Possibly a slight design modification? For what it's worth, I know next to nothing about old gold.
Faith in eBay? Blast ye say! I would bet it has a problem or the seller would be much more realistic about the minimum bid. Maybe it's had a share of conservation, such as removal of weld spots or something serious like that...maybe a hole filled, etc. Something an inexperienced collector (or shoddy slabbing company) wouldn't pick.
coin appears reasonably genuine to me. you cannot judge by comparison w/ "redbook" pics because there are several die varieties. however, disregarding the plastic, buy from centsles at your own risk. beware
got out my trusty 50th Anniversary Red book for a mini picture of these...
the "C" mintmark is too far left?...the pic in my Redbook shows the "C" mintmark on an 1838-C right above the "3",not so far left as where the "C" on this piece appears to be...also that line of the nose from the forhead to the tip sure looks straight, real straight...
it would be nice to see a pic of the reverse of a coin that i'm going to be plunking down thousands of dollars for...
this one looks like a replica to me...
take the "C" and add "OPY"?....

The nose line & forecurls don't look right, and the 2 1/2 D. on the reverse is compressed compared to the redbook. The Redbook has the . under the arrow tips, the auction image has the . under the eagle's claw. Looks like a fake to me.
the right wing is almost in a straight line from the tip to the breast..."2 1/2 D." is not in the same place as in the mini pic of the 1835 coin shown in my Red Book?...
serious design changes from 1834-1839 on these 1/4 eagles?
if so,why?

This date and mint come with four different die varieties so the slightly positional varieations between this one and the Redbook photo are meaningless. As for what the problem is look at the obverse at 12:00. It kind of looks like a mounting has been removed.
