Largest (quantity) purchase you've made...

If I end up with this lot of Lincolns, it should turn out to be close to 100,000 coins, which would be the largest quantity of coins I have ever acquired at once. Granted, they are coming to me as cheaply as US coins can come without being free, so I don't in any way propose that I am a heavy roller here with a 100,000 coin "deal." Thinking of it, though, left me with a question. What's the largest "deal" any of you would care to share?

In shear number of coins, it would have to be a roll of 1957-D Lincoln cents, all uncirculated! Rarely do I buy more than three coins at once.

  • mbbiker....no reason to be embarrassed. My first bulk purchase was 2 lbs. of world coins too. Then I bought 5 and my last ones were 10 lbs each. Thinking about 25 lbs. next time. Gotta do something til the 2003 pocket change comes out!

The largest in total number of coins... Probably when I got $10 worth of cents at the bank. So that'd be 1000 coins. But if that doesn't count, then probably somewhere around 100 coins from one of those pot luck wheat cents deals on ebay.
  • 1500 Seated Quarters and Halves from 1838-1876 (the Evergreen deal). Most were high grade. That was an amazing deal.

The scary part, they are only a very minor part of a huge collection. WOW!

I never do much in volume. The most coins I ever bought a one time was probably close to 1,000 pieces. It was most junk silver.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

About two months ago I bought 15,033 Wheat cents from local retiree, all separated by dates and in rolls. They fit nicely in two ammo cans, but were a chore to lug up the stairs to my office. I also just purchased 264 pounds (120 kilos) of world coins from a guy in Europe. The shipping costs on this purchase exceeded the price I paid for the coins. Interestingly enough, shipping to a business address was $180 cheaper than shipping to a residential address. image

Wait, I do remember getting some bulk silver and got 200 coins out of it. That may be the highest in quantity from a single transaction.

A couple hundred lbs. or so of Ike and Kennedy rolls. Takes a heavy duty dolly to get them to the truck.image

Ammo box of rolled cents pre-64. took a dolly to move it and two months to search and reroll by date.

All very interesting responses. Like I said before, my 100,000 coin deal won't come close in value or in expenditure to some of the single coin deals made on a regular basis by others who lurk and post here. I was just curious to see if others had ever ran into a deal this size (in pounds) before.

Interestingly enough, I made a purchase once that beats this one in monetary amount by double, but the number of coins came to no more than 4,500 - it was a roll deal with BU cent rolls from 1935-1955 - 90 rolls in all. Bid on the lot was $2,450 and I got it for $2,100. That was nearly two years ago and I still have some of that lot in my safe.

    Thanks for the replies.

  • One each of 1999 and 2000 uncirculated and clad proof sets. Slabbed coins would be 4 at one time.

I bought 2 lbs of coins on ebay for $25, and received a $5 baggie of junk.

Guess that's what happens when you buy coins by the pound.

Somebody should do a recount...50 coins? I thought a quarter roll was 40 coins.
