The oddest offer

I spoke to a gent who has been in the business for years this morning, but hasn't been in contact with me for nearly two years - the call was a bit of a suprise. Anyhow, got an offer to buy nearly $1000 in cent change kept over the past 40-50 years in buckets at face. Three 5 gallon containers stuffed full of rolled cents, much of it circulated with a scattering of mixed date solid BU rolls...can't beat that with a stick! Now I gotta figure out a way to get a vehicle that can handle that much weight over a 300 mile journey I'll have to drive to pick it up. Just my kind of hoard, an unsearched pile of cents that will take a year or more for me to go all the way through! Just thought I'd share.

Hey, I'd be willing to take a few rolls off your hands for $1/roll. That's 100% profit!

Dog - I understand your sentiment, and I see that a lot from a lot of people. I understand where a lot of people wouldn't see it as economically feasable to do something like that, and wouldn't want to go through the pain and trouble to sort trough it - but ya gotta remember, it's what I love doing most! It's the pickle jar door stop full of pennies magnified a couple hundred times. Exactly what I want...to be able to go to the bank and pick up a grand in cents without having to fish out all the zinc crap to get to the goodies!

Lucy - Hmm....I could imagine the gas bill on that. My Escort will have a hard time shuffling 675 lbs. in coins, but at least it'll still get 25MPG while doing it. I told my wife about this purchase, and she him-hawed about it until I told her, "no...you don't understand...$1000 is 100,000 coins, which is over 650 lbs. of coins." Her response, "oh sh$t, how are you gonna get all of those down here?"

NWCS - Let me see if they are worth it. If I open some and see they are genuinely unsearched, unmolested pocket change rolls that are at least 30 years old, I'll do it. If they are junk, I'd rather not take your money - I'd rather just stick them back in the bank and circulate them. Honesty is the best policy, and I don't want anyone getting ripped. I'm only doing it sight unseen because I'm buying them at face...you can't lose at face.

  • We are very short of pennies in this country, maybe the patriotic thing to do is circulate them. I have a box of pennies that i have throw into for 35 years. I pulled it out the other day just to see whats in there. Probably a hundred pounds of pennies and many are still full luster red. Its interesting how they stay red for so long even tho unprotected. If I had time I bet there are some ms 65 and 66 rd 1960s in there.
    good luck with the search.

I'm sure 90% of what's in this bunch will end up back in circulation after no more than a couple of months. I intend on separating the better dates to scope through, then re-roll the rest. Consider it a preservation to pick out any goodies that may be in there before the streets and car tires get ahold of them, which is where most cents end up. How would you like to know you were the one to recirculate an AU 1972 DDO to find out it ended up ran over 100 times in the 7-11 parking lot? I can't think of the horror.

That's only about 650 pounds; shouldn't be much trouble at all with a truck or SUV.

Wayneherndon - How's about that journey in a Ford Escort, all highway? Think it'll make it? I'm thinking that weight isn't much more than three grown men, I weigh 200 pounds. As long as I spread it around a bit, I don't think it should be trouble.

Dog - Sorry...I didn't figure there to be two of you - now I see.

66 tbird - I wish I had more opportunities than I do to get these kinds of offers...they don't come along often, that's for sure.

Don't know--I never had a Ford Escort. But, your 3 grown men analysis seems sound to me. I have hauled over 2000 pounds of coins in our Suburban which is twice the rate it is rated for. Just allow a bit more time to get around the car in front of you in the unlikely event you need to pass someone. LOL. Reminds me of trip to Germany where I rented an Opal station wagon for me, two kids, a wife and a mother-in-law and all the luggage involved!

  • I have hauled 950# of magazines in a two door geo metro, no problem, except when I took a loop offramp a little too fast in the rain, fishtailed a little.
Just a suggestion, I'd pack them in front of the rear axle if I were you, or your front end may get a little squirrelly. Best of luck. If you get bored, i have a handful of wheat cents that need searching.

I think I have the problem solved....I'll take a dozen bank bags with me and fill each with $50 or so in coins...Stick three or four in the floorboard in front of each seat, then three or four in the back with whatever is left. That should evenly distribute the weight well enough. This is going to be fun!!

RGL - Thanks for the well wishes. I know the likelihood that I'll find an elusive 1969S doubled die, 1970S doubled die (or even small dates for that matter), or even the 1972 doubled dies will be somewhat slim, but there's more of a chance in those coins than there would be in any bank source from modern times. Heck, there could be darn near anything in them! I'm all juiced up to go, problem is I don't think I will have time before February to pick them up...bummer.

  • I hope that you find a bunch of keepers. I'll also be willing to bet you'll have some mighty green looking finger tips after holding all of those copper coins.image
  • coppercoinscoppercoins Posts: 6,084 ✭✭✭
I'm used to the green finger thing. Been doing this a while....but with them sitting all that time without being disturbed - who knows what the heck could pop out of those rolls...

Oh...by the way, I may have failed to mention that these are all paper wrapped and have been for some time now. There could very well be some highly roll toned models in those papers. If so, I'll have to post to the effect for you toning folks. Any toned coins in the lot will be for sale, of course.
