  • Wait, wait, wait. Hold the presses. He's still missing the Cullen in a PSA 9.

I had started a thread a while ago for RBeaton for completing his set 100%. He wasn't showing the cards at the time, but he told us he was still missing three PSA 9's at the time.

    Ya see?
  • The really interesting question is who will get to an all PSA 9 or better set first?

    RBeaton or LuxuryWines?

There will be a special Koolaid Celebration Thread for the winner of course.

    This Kinda' suprised me???

    1970 Kellogg's Baseball set Registry.

    There are currently:

    7 collections that reached 100%...............Wow!

1 collection that needs only 1 card to complete...(Jeff).

2 more collections that need only 6 and 8 cards to complete..(Dave Jacobs and Michael Disfarmer)

14 out of the 20 collections carry a 9.00 avg. or better!....Again Wow!

    Great Job to all collectors!!!

(I better get a little more focused on my set....Hmmm...)

  • Thanks for the congratulations Larry, however, as gemmintman pointed out, I completed the set a while back, however, I did have 3 8's at the time. I'm down to needing the Cullen in 9 to complete in 9 or better. Anyone out there got an extra one??? image

  • Wow,

Congrats Robert !!! A very fine accomplishment... I know the feeling of being one card away from a complete 9 ... I actually have a Perry PSA 7 ... but refuse to include it in this fine PSA 9 VINTAGE SET image ... Jeff

    King Kellogg,

No "wow" at all--set is the easiest on the registry to collect in 9--it took me about a week--and I wasn't really trying. The difficulty is trying to get the 10s.

    Mr. Davalillo....

Positive comments fuel a positive hobby.......

What I see is 14 out of 20 collectors have 9.00 avg or better. A VERY positive statement.

What I don't see is your 9.00 or better set..................Anywhere!

    Mr. King Kellogg,

Realistic comments make for a more useful and insightful message board. Silly comments without backup make it much less valuable. If 9s make up a large percentage of the submissions it is not a positive comment that everyone has 9s. The surprise is that everyone doesn't have an all psa 9 set--WOW!!
  • Vic, why do you have to show such disrespect to everyone's Kellogg's collecting efforts? It still costs around $2,000 to put an all PSA 9 set together. That's a ton of money for some people, and they're doing it card by card.

We're terribly sorry that we don't all have the financial ability, on a whim, to buy up complete or near complete graded sets in a week like you do Vic.

  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Gemmint,

You have dropped megabucks into your sets so knock it off--I made no reference to money. My point was the cards are unbelievably plentiful in psa 9 and if you have a couple thousand dollars it is simple to put together a psa 9 set and it is certainly not deserving of a wow.

    Davalillo
  • carew4mecarew4me Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭✭
    I totally agree with Vic.

In fact I thought the reason most people were collecting this set was to join a brotherhood
that was smartly fueled by a few collectors who already had the top spots locked up.

This set IS PLENTIFUL. It is very easy to get a complete set in 9's in about a week.

Dont let the cold reality of availability rain on your parade.

KOLLECT IT SO YOU CAN BE IN THE KLUB - THATS THE POINT RIGHT?

    Loves me some shiny!
  • Vic, yes I have spent a lot of money on my sets. So what? I'm the first person here to congratulate anyone because I love these cards, and I know how difficult it can be to FINISH this set in PSA 9. Sure the bulk of the cards are easy, but there are a handful that are a royal pain. You wouldn't know since you just pick up the phone or e-mail and have your personal dealers do all the work for you.

I have also built and sold an all PSA 9 Kellogg's set and I'm building other '70 Kellogg's PSA 9 sets as well. It's not nearly as easy as you make it out to be. It took two years to build the first PSA 9 set. Now it takes less time because the supply is much better, but it still takes time when one buys these Kellogg's cards individually on Ebay and submits cards. You didn't do any of that, and that's fine by me, but guys like Beaton and Luxury to name a couple have been working hard over a year on their sets, and those last few 9's are very tough to come by. You don't have to rag on their efforts like some spoiled hobby brat.

No you didn't mention money specifically, but you alluded to it. Big deal, a PSA 9 set you said, I put that together in a week. Sure you did, all your little hobby helpers put it together for you. WOW! The rest of the collectors are out in the trenches buying the cards individually and submitting them.

Why do you have to belittle our efforts and accomplishments? And yes, that includes me because I still can't find some elusive 9's.

  • << <i>It is very easy to get a complete set in 9's in about a week. >>

Then go ahead and do it Carew4me. Go ahead, show us how easy it is.

  • << <i>it took me about a week--and I wasn't really trying. >>

Davalillo, sure you can put it together quickly (if you have enough $$$), but it takes guys like me, Zardoz, gemmintman, King Kellogg, etc., who are submitting these cards so you can just buy them. In fact, 15-20% of your set probably came from me. I could have put together the set in a day or so if I really wanted to and had enough money. The fact is, I'm trying to do this set on a budget, and it's taken me over a year to get where I'm at. I refused to pay $200 for the Horlen when that's what they were going for. And I won't be paying what I consider a ridiculous price for the last card I need either.

<< <i>KOLLECT IT SO YOU CAN BE IN THE KLUB - THATS THE POINT RIGHT? >>

I have been collecting these way before I knew who Zardoz and gemminman were. I collect them because it's a great looking set, affordable and has plenty of HOFers.

  • BTW, according to the All Time Finest list for the '70 Kellogg's, there are exactly FOUR sets that have every card in the set a PSA 9 or better. They are GMM, Zardoz, King Kellogg, and Nines are Nicer. Open the others up if you don't believe me. There are a few more that are extremely close and will be there soon, but currently only 4 sets are a 9 or better after over 3 years that this set has been graded! Yeah, it's obviously a breeze to put together in 9 or better.

And Vic, where's your set? I have to wonder if you're missing a tough 9 or two. My guess is yes.

  • << <i>KOLLECT IT SO YOU CAN BE IN THE KLUB - THATS THE POINT RIGHT? >>

Carew4me - I think you need to a little more research... I happen to collect sets that I really like and most are not well followed...(ie -1969 Topps Decals, 1968 Topps Game, 1936 Goudey,1914 Polo Grounds GAme and Kellogg's (I also collect 72,73,74 and will probably collect 71 soon too.) This one happened to develop a following after I was about 40-50% into the set...

Besides what is wrong with the Kellogg's Krowd.... Last time I checked collecting and hobbies are supposed to be fun ... Or have you lost sight of that?

    LW,
I agree with you 100%. But I think some are collecting this set to part of the Klub.
That does not make it an indictment on those that do.

Every since the Kraze started the number of Registry sets have doubled.

In 12 months I predict there will be at least 10-15 sets 100% in 9 or better.

Therefor the collectors must be doing for fun, which is the point and not for investment or rarity.

    Lighten up, its only cardboard.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • Carew4me, if you've been paying attention to these K-threads, you would see that when collectors get one of these cards in their hands they're hooked. It's that simple.

Do you really think collectors are going to shell out $2000+ and spend a year or more of their time collecting this set just so they can be part of our K-Klub? image
  • At least you spelled "Kraze" correctly image.

Okay VD, fess up. At what % are you at and how much $$$ has it taken you to get there. I bet you will not tell. You know why, cause it's likely a kings ransom and in all reality very embarrasing. You know where I'm at, 26 stinking cards. You know how much I've got into them, <$300. You know how satisfying bottom feeding for cards for your set is, of coarse you don't. You should try it at least once though, you might even start to enjoy this hobby.

How can a guy like Vic be vilified and a guy like Marshall Fogel be revered?
Haven't they both spent big bucks?

Are you a better collector if you bargain hunt over time?

If that was the case you all would be throwing rose petals at my feet.

  • BobSBobS Posts: 1,738 ✭✭
Check the Marshall posts - I'm absent. I'm not saying the frugal collector is a better collector or anything like that. My humble opinion is that folks like VD (and the other "superstars" of the collecting world) could not possibly be enjoying this great hobby as much as me. It seems like too much of a business to them. I'm the #2 guy for a small-time environmental consulting company. My whole day is centered around business "issues". I HATE that. How anybody could take this type of approach to collecting little pieces of cardboard, and still enjoy it, is beyond me.

  • << <i>How can a guy like Vic be vilified and a guy like Marshall Fogel be revered? >>

<< <i>Haven't they both spent big bucks? >>

When did anyone here ever say that spending a lot of money on cards makes you a bad guy??

To answer your question, Marshall isn't rude and doesn't come to the board and belittle people's collecting efforts.
  • Robert, congratulations on completing the set. I would have been impressed if it was all 8's.

I appreciate that most of the guys (and girls?) on these boards have a load more money to play with than I do. (I probably spend less than $2000 a year on cards). That does not make them better or worse collectors than me. I still have not had the pleasure of completing a set on the registry, I hope to complete the '64 Giants set early next year, probably with an average of 7.5 to 8.0. When this happens i will be very pleased with my efforts as it will have taken me over a year and has been far from easy. I am sure a fat bank balance would make it easier but perhaps not as enjoyable. I have met and traded with many great guys from these boards.

<< <i>How can a guy like Vic be vilified and a guy like Marshall Fogel be revered? >>

I don't know either of them but I found Davillios comments a bit harsh.

    << <i>easiest on the registry to collect in 9--it took me about a week--and I wasn't really trying >>

To me it just sounds like he is bragging, that is not a quality I admire.

    Just my 2 pence.

    Well-

    Couple of points.

1)I love the hobby as much as anyone.
2)I see nothing more or less enjoyable in buying the cards in a group vs. individually
3)Despite what gemmint says, it is easy to put a psa 9 set together. It is not hard to put a psa 8 or better set of 1967 Topps or 1968 Topps together. The fact that not many of these have been put together is not a testimony to its difficulty.
4)Maybe I am vilified by a few of the Kellogg's crowd but I would challenge the gentleman who said that to find serious collectors or dealers who would speak poorly of me
5)Kellogg's cards are fine--so are Toys R Us cards, I also think KMart has some sets.
6)I still view the purpose of the Message Board to exchange views about set collecting --not pouring kool-aid.
7)Its too bad that Gemmint and some of his followers can't accept a dissenting view without a personal attack.

    King,

Thanks, and I read each word of yours. You actually have some 10s in your set which are difficult. I said originally I would put it up when it was one of the top two sets. So when it passes Zardoz I will put it up. I haven't attempted to buy any 10s recently but maybe after the turn of the year I will try again.
To think that stating the obvious would cause such an uproar.
At least I did see a couple others call it a modern set which of course it is.
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
Is there another set 1970 or before that comes anywhere near this

    7571 total submissions
    4957 graded psa 9(unqualified)
Over two thirds of all cards graded are 9s or 10s.

    What's my point?

The 9s are extremely plentiful and it is not difficult to assemble a psa 9 set. I am repeating myself but gemmint needs things said twice for him once in awhile.
  • Vic, we all know the PSA Pop Statistics. Most of us agree that the 9's are plentiful except for a few cards (which you're probably missing or your set would be registered by now).

Without getting into any serious debates or questions here (as this is a topic I don't watch to touch with a ten foot pole!)

Has anyone on this board re-submitted what they felt were high-grade PSA 9's? If so, what were the results? I again am not taking sides -- but I would have to believe that with nearly 5,000 unqualified PSA 9's -- that some percentage of them might get a PSA 10 on a resubmission -- even if it is 1% -- that is almost nearly an entire PSA 10 set. Just wondering....

    Mr Davalillo....

    4957 9's so far...

When my daughter was 1, she said "da-da" for the first time. WOW!

There has been 100's of millions of babies that have said that same phrase. And every time a proud father held his head high and just beamed!

I guess that your take on this whole story is that because it's been said a ba'zillion times for a ba'zillion years, that it doesn't deserve a "WOW".

Did you forget the human side to all this collecting stuff?

  • Schmidty, I've resubmitted a few 8's and had good results but have never tried any 9's. I have received back quite a few 10's, but they were all from raw.
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
Actually Gemmint you are wrong on both scores. Every card is plentiful in 9. Perhaps I am wrong but if my memory serves me correct that "tough" Carlos May card has 13 9s and that ever so tough Joel Horlen had something like 25. On the other score, I don't have enough 10s to beat a 9.32--but I think I have a couple that you don't.
  • Vic, I'm right as usual. Thirteen 9's for May, fourteen 9's for Cullen etc...is pretty tough when most of them are in sets already or held by people who won't sell them. If they can't be had then it's not plentiful for collecting purposes.

Yes, and I have many more 10's that you don't have and never will.
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    King Kellogg,

No doubt kids deserve a wow. They are terrific and I have two of them. I interpreted your wow as implying difficulty in achievement. Subject dropped.
