What would happen if .....

What would happen if the next designs of US coins were like many of the early US coins which did not have the denomination on the coin or had the value lettered on the edge? Would the nation survive?

Yes, if the dollar coin had a picture of a bigmac on it. The 50 cent had a picture of a coke can on it, the 25 cent had a phone handle on it, the dime having a coffee cup, and the rest would go away.

    Ahh, the McDonald's culture...
  • Edge-lettering might cause short-term problems for 3rd party graders. A new slab design would have to be introduced so the third side of the coin could be seen. Conder101 would be very busy.image
  • You're asking what would happen if our coins were like the first 1883 "No Cents" nickels and didn't have the denominations on them right? Well considering that our citizens have a hard enough time just figuring out which ocean is on which coast (ever watch Jay Leno and "Jay Walking"?), which countries neighbor us and how many states we have, not to mention the growing number of illegal immigrants, you'd probably have the ACLU, NAACP and other rights groups protesting the day the coins came out. It'll never happen.

  • Couldn't you just imagine being at a change window? That'll be $5.05 ma'am. Instead of getting ninety-five cents of change back, that minimum wage worker will be lining his pockets with extra money on every transaction they can get away with. Stores that hire 'challenged' workers will soon be on the ropes and looking for more workers!

What would happen if....so that means if it were done (which I doubt 100%).

I think there would be mass chaos. The world community is already up in arms about the US being one of the last economic powers to use words instead of numbers for denominations - I couldn't imagine them ever deciding to go back to having no denominations on the coins at all.
