How can an E Bay seller sell a coin on E Bay and state "I have not had the coin authenticated" .....so all sales are final
Does E Bay tolerate this B.S. ? In my view this is fraud
Stewart
I have provided the seller with everything he needs to determine that it is not genuine.
It's a shame to see people bidding on this.
I don't think Ebay will do a Thing Stewart but it might be worth a try.
<< <i>BECAUSE THIS COIN HASN'T BEEN VERIFIED AS AUTHENTIC ALL SALES ARE FINAL. >>
Doesnt make much sense does it? Some buyer is goin to get screwed.
Let's all send him emails...
I just sent this to the seller:
Dear seller,
I regret to inform you that your coin is obviously an 1858 that has been altered and not a genuine 1856. It is easy to tell by looking at the date and positioning of some of the letters. I say this as a full time numismatist of more than 20 years.
This is an obvious enough alteration so that I would imagine you have heard from other numismatists, as well,
and I hope and expect you will do the honorable/right thing and close this sale.
As you have excellent Ebay feedback, I will presume that this is an honest mistake.
However, in your terms of sale, where you state "BECAUSE THIS COIN HASN'T BEEN VERIFIED AS AUTHENTIC ALL SALES ARE FINAL", it actually makes you look like you do know the coin is not a genuine 1856. If it had been verified/ certified by a major grading company that would be a legitimate reason to make all sales final. But, because it has not been authenticated, sales should not be final.
Your terms of sale are, quite frankly, completely backwards for a genuine coin but they make perfect sense for you as the seller, if you have reason to believe the coin is not genuine.
I will check your listing later, after you have had time to consider the consequences of your actions.
Sincerely,
Mark
Tom

I've ended this auction as I strive to keep a perfect feedback and will not
sell something as genuine when it isn't. After looking at the other 1856
coins I can see the difference in the lettering. Whoever did this did a good
job on the date and I know it has been in the family I bought it from for at
least 50 years. Thanks, Jacque

Great job, goose!
Kudos to him and I told him so.
I guess the link to my registry page and pics of my coins worked.

<< <i>Did people really alter coins more than 50 years ago as he stated that he knew the coin was in the family for more than 50 years? >>
Yes, people have been playing with 56 Flyers for a long time.

Unfortunately people have been altering coins for much longer than that, as well as counterfeiting and making unauthorized restrikes.

In addition, he did cancel the auction, but only after all three of his bidders cancelled their bids (evidently because someone from here or another observant eBay'er noticed the counterfeit and alerted them). With no current bidders and a plethora of third-parties in a flurry to tell any prospective bidders that the coin was a fake, the seller really had no choice but to cancel the auction.
