Yet another Non 1856FE.

goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
Really an altered 1858 SL

BTW,
I sent the seller a Very polite email informing he/she of such and offered to email them photos of the '56 and 58sl to compare.

Guess we'll see what happens.

Just got an email back. Seems as though I don't have him convinced. I sent a link to my set and told him to compare his to mine and to the 1858 SL, specifically AMERICA, which is THE immediate giveway.

Good eye! Both the date and the "o" in "of" are incorrect - what do you see in "america" that catches your eye??

How can an E Bay seller sell a coin on E Bay and state "I have not had the coin authenticated" .....so all sales are final

Does E Bay tolerate this B.S. ? In my view this is fraud

I have provided the seller with everything he needs to determine that it is not genuine.

It's a shame to see people bidding on this.

I don't think Ebay will do a Thing Stewart but it might be worth a try.
  • I love his line "Because it's not certified, all sales are final"...
  • He know what hes doing hes probably the person that made this...

<< <i>BECAUSE THIS COIN HASN'T BEEN VERIFIED AS AUTHENTIC ALL SALES ARE FINAL. >>

Doesnt make much sense does it? Some buyer is goin to get screwed.

  • Let's all send him emails...

    Goose et all,

I just sent this to the seller:

    Dear seller,

I regret to inform you that your coin is obviously an 1858 that has been altered and not a genuine 1856. It is easy to tell by looking at the date and positioning of some of the letters. I say this as a full time numismatist of more than 20 years.

This is an obvious enough alteration so that I would imagine you have heard from other numismatists, as well, image

and I hope and expect you will do the honorable/right thing and close this sale.

As you have excellent Ebay feedback, I will presume that this is an honest mistake.

However, in your terms of sale, where you state "BECAUSE THIS COIN HASN'T BEEN VERIFIED AS AUTHENTIC ALL SALES ARE FINAL", it actually makes you look like you do know the coin is not a genuine 1856. If it had been verified/ certified by a major grading company that would be a legitimate reason to make all sales final. But, because it has not been authenticated, sales should not be final.

Your terms of sale are, quite frankly, completely backwards for a genuine coin but they make perfect sense for you as the seller, if you have reason to believe the coin is not genuine.

I will check your listing later, after you have had time to consider the consequences of your actions.

    Sincerely,
    Mark

Nice letter - sure would make me think twice if I were the seller.

I sent my email to the user, a tad more polite, but COINGUY1 had much better style, I like it.

The seller has just ended his auction. It looks like we got to him. Here is what he wrote to me:

    <FONT size=2>
I've ended this auction as I strive to keep a perfect feedback and will not
sell something as genuine when it isn't. After looking at the other 1856
coins I can see the difference in the lettering. Whoever did this did a good
job on the date and I know it has been in the family I bought it from for at
    least 50 years. Thanks, Jacque

I just received a very nice email from the seller, in which he expressed his appreciation to those who wrote to him and let him know his coin was altered. He is an honorable man and should be recognized as such. So, T T T

Did people really alter coins more than 50 years ago as he stated that he knew the coin was in the family for more than 50 years?

Unfortunately people have been altering coins for much longer than that, as well as counterfeiting and making unauthorized restrikes.

I would hold back your praise for the seller so quickly. I still take issue with the text in his auction listing, regarding the no-return policy due to the coin not being authenticated. I looked in his previous auctions and no such text was ever present, so it's not exactly a standard policy he was following for selling this item.

In addition, he did cancel the auction, but only after all three of his bidders cancelled their bids (evidently because someone from here or another observant eBay'er noticed the counterfeit and alerted them). With no current bidders and a plethora of third-parties in a flurry to tell any prospective bidders that the coin was a fake, the seller really had no choice but to cancel the auction.
  • The seller realizes that the coin is not genuine but "I am in it so deep I couldn't sell it for less than $1125.00." I offered $50.00 since it appears in the photo as a quality counterfeit. Is that an insulting offer?image

MosesBlack : Your offer was fair, but it may have been a bit premature. The guy just found out that he lost his shirt (presumably) and you're offering the cuff button back to him. Let him go without the shirt for a while to swallow that reality before offering him a small token of what he thought he had. Sometimes it takes people a few days to snap into reality. Best thing is to reply to him and tell him to chew on the offer for a bit.

A guy loses his life savings gambling in a casino then finds a $5 chip on the floor. He has to swallow his pride and pick up the chip if he wants lunch.
