1950 Bowman Football set at Lelands

Completed Auction

SMR for the set in 8 is $15655. Adding the difference for the 9's in the set and subtracting the missing card, it is $16975. The set only went for $11204 with buyer's premium. Not nearly as strong as the recent graded babeball set auctions, eh?

On the plus side, a 1952 Topps Baseball nickel pack with tears on two corners went for $6561.

  • When I was buying up this set in PSA-7, SMR on commons was $32, and I was regularly getting them for $20. I don't think that the football stuff is as popular as the baseball stuff.

This is sad, because the cards are wonderful.

If that had been a baseball set in PSA-8, people would have killed themselves for it.

  • ..which is exactly why I chose to breakup my PSA 8 50B Football set into singles. $11k is a joke for that set. Split up the stars and you're gonna make up close to half that number already. Obviously football isn't as popular, but there are quite a few collectors of this set out there...
  • I collected this set as well, and got out of it a while back also.

You have to consider, though. Lelands is not really known for card auctions. Why would someone dump a set like this with them.

As far as FB being dead, I would not quite go that far. There are several FB sets doing very well right now. The bad part is that I happen to collect both of them. The 1955 AA cards are in most cases selling for staggering prices, while some of the 1956 Topps FB cards in the superior auction brought great prices as well. A PSA-10 Common from 1956 sold for over $1000. WOW.

    Just my 2 cents.

I was surprised. They had some premium items like two 1964 vending boxes (Hi No's) and a run of high grade vintage sets. I was going to go after the '69 set but the bidding went too high considering most of the low pop cards were not of PSA 8 NQ quality.
  • I agree. The market is strong for vintage football right now.

True. I would have definitely bid. Where is the auction exposure for such a set? This set would have done much better in a Superior caliber auction listing.

The early Bowman and Leaf football sets are doing quite well with set builders right now. Like the 1955 Topps AA set, they are just the right size to collect (range of 100 cards), and most common and star prices are very affordable.

There is a definite challenge in collecting early vintage football. High grade singles (PSA 8 and higher) are very difficult to locate. The PSA poulation report lists many of the PSA 8s in low single digits with PSA 9s as 1 to 0 ... even SGC has very few graded. Whlie attending the last National Show to work on my 1948 Bowman PSA set and , I found only 2 dealers with any these cards graded in PSA.
