Pattern experts - 1855 Flying Eagle Pattern?

I`ve never heard of this before. The price is out of my comfort zone and wondered what you guys ( and gals ) thought about it. 1855 Flying Eagle Pattern

  • I've actually seen an example of this piece in person. It was the precursor to the FE cent and it does look kinda cool. The reverse looks like the reverse from the cent in the 1820's and the eagle has a longer neck than the one eventually settled for. The date on the one I saw had the slanted 55 pattern.

It's too much to use "Buy it Now." The seller is a good guy, and who knows, could bargain. I wouldn't pay more than about $1500/1600 as a collector, less as a dealer. An NGC 64 BN sold for $1610, with juice in 8-2000. An NGC 65 Bn sold for $1700 with juice in 7-2001 and a PCGS 63 BN for $1600 in 6-2001. Pops are 25, with 33 higher and 23 RBs at PCGS and 1,3 at NGC, with 6 RBs and 16 MSs. I'm in the process of selling a J167 NGC PR 65RB for less, and it is the same, except for the composition. If you need any more info, feel free to PM me. Rick

I recently purchased a PR65RB finest known graded 1855 Flying Eagle from a Forum Member who specializes in Patterns for less money than the BIN price in that auction. I enjoy both the 1855 and 1854 Flying Eagles, because they are so darn rare and so darn (relatively) inexpensive.

Historically, many of these coins have no fared well throughout time (obviously a gem coin today can still be obtained for around $2k). I personally do not buy these coins for"investment" - I buy them because I "love them" and the history surrounding them. If they end up performing well as an investment for me - all the better. If they do not go up one penny in 20 years - I will have enjoyed every day I owned them nonetheless.

I always like to add 1854, 1855 Pattern Flyers to my collection - PM if you have any neat ones to sell image Wondercoin.

I agree wholeheartedly with Wondercoin's characterization of RB 167s and 168s.

Those "flying turkey eagle" large cent patterns are nice coins. But I agree with what others have said here, this one is a $1500 - $1700 coin. I saw several very similar at the Baltimore show, they could have been picked up for $1500.image

The 1858 "turkey eagle patterns" like the J-202, J-203, J-204, J-205 and J-206 small cents are also neat.image
