Question regarding Jefferson Nickel Cameo Designation

I don't collect Jefferson Nickels but I do collect cameo coinage. Can anyone tell me if a 1938-1942 Jefferson nickel requires both sides cameo to be designated as cameo? What if just the obverse is cameo and not the reverse?

    Yes.

PCGS' standards require both sides to be CAM/DCAM to earn the designation, regardless of series. If you have a DCAM obverse and a brilliant reverse, it does not win a cameo grade. By the same token, you could have a DCAM obverse and a CAM reverse and it would only receive the CAM designation.
  • Except wheat cents -- they are not required to have cameo reverses.

What does a wheat cent reverse Jefferson Nickel look like?

  • It looks like a Liberty nickel, but less sarcastic. image

I was replying to RGL's "regardless of series" post.

Stewart: I also believe everyone else here is correct. Two sides needed for everything except cents. One day perhaps the PCGS can slab a coin "CAM OBV" and it will command a nice premium. image Wondercoin

  • I've seen a few with light cameo on both sides, not enough for the designation. BNE has the only DCAM, at least I think there is only 1 DCAM from the early years.

I would pay extra for one with a strong cameo obverse even if the reverse is brilliant. Especially if it was a '39. That is because I already have other dates I really like, my '38 and '40 have light cameo, my '41 and '42 T1 have neat toning...

    Carl,

It was the 1939 that I saw with just the obverse as a cameo. It was a nice no question cameo except the reverse was brilliant.I will try to get it but no promises.I am just letting you know the coin exists.

Here's one I got from Rick T, RI Coins through ebay 2-3 years back. I think I paid $125. A PCGS PR66 blue label, pardon the hairlines on the slab. All my PCGS slabs, especially the green labeled are plagued with
hundreds of microscopic hairlines, oh well. Thought I share this. PM me with the whereabouts Stewart, I'd
like to see the coin and auction.

  • Nice coin Leo! I like it. I can see it is possible to upgrade my PR 67 if I look hard enough.

I need a scratch remover for my slabs too. People have mentioned success using a few different brands plastic scratch remover.

    Thanks Carl
I would practice on some worthless slab to see if whatever you try will work. Or I'd plan on the $5 reholder fee and then sell.
Did a little surfing and came across a 1950 PCGS PF67 CAM. There is a $25 gratuity fee for this service. LOL
