1940 S/S Jefferson RPM1

Does any forum member have a SEGS or ANACS Pop report on a 1940 S/S MS64 Jefferson 5 steps RPM 1. I just picked this up....my weekend purchase. The Jefferson RPM guide shows a "rarity" of 25! Any more info out there about this coin?....Thanks.

Enjoy your coins.......

Rarity "25" RPM ?

  • It looks like an interesting purchase. I know nothing about circulating strikes or SEGS/ANACS pops... I did just buy "The Jefferson Nickel Analyst" though. Maybe I'll learn a little as I read it!

4/7 plus 1 MS66. There were a few of these varieties on ebay yesterday. One auction showed a clipped 1999 Jeff in a labeled 1965 SEGS holder.

I highly recommend Wiles' Jeff RPM book ... Wexler's latest the Best of the Jefferson Doubled Dies as well. On the variety front, if you are looking for a sleeper, try finding a Large S variety from 1941 in BU. A very scarce coin in uncirculated, although methinks Fivaz and Stanton mistated the overall rarity in the latest Cherrypickers'. I have 20 to 25 circulated examples, but this coin is tough in BU.
  • I agree with RGL - both books are required for the serious Jefferson collector. I recently purchased a 1941 large S in an ANACS holder in MS65. I also believe this is a tougher coin in MS than generally believed. There are several other Jefferson sleepers that can found at very reasonable prices.

Thanks for the inquiry, GQ ... as you know finding those early '70s Jeff proofs (both a decent coin and a decent DCAM grade) can be a toughie. Working on it ... I think so many of these coins are locked up in collections, they are hard to come across. I think other dates are elusively tough to find as well. As an example, David Hall owed me a 1980 PR-69 DCAM for the better part of two months as part of a bigger purchase (but, they found they did not have the coin in stock after selling it) and even they had difficulty coming up with one. They had a dealer submit some for grading, but they did not make the grade or they did not care for the toning. They ultimately came up with one, but it took almost two months! Meanwhile, I was watching for the 1980 PR-69 DCAM on eBay and elsewhere and saw perhaps two examples in eight weeks and both went for around $50. It supposedly is a "common" coin, but try finding it! I don't think non-specialists realize it can be hard to come up with some of these modern Jeff proofs. The 79 Type 2 also seems to be a "hot" coin that attracts a lot of bids ...
  • RGL: I agree....the early 1970's and 1980's PR69 DCAM's are tough. I am more amazed by the number of bidders on these coins and the amounts realized. What's up with the 1971-s Proof 68 or 69 DCAM......only 35 coins graded! Are there any more out there?

I see you are on track to finish with a Proof 68 gross score.....nice set! I have a 1982 PR69 DCAM in the mail and that will be my last up date. My 1979's and 1981's are PR68 DCAMs. Black and White gems.....no need to upgrade for a few points.

Leo: Is that a SEGS pop number? 4 graded at MS64 and 7 higher?

Thanks again everyone for the SEGS and ANACS help on the PCGS Registry Forum. I am getting hooked on those darn Varieties.

    Enjoy your coins.....I do
