The show looked pretty active which is fairly typical for this NE Illinois show. There
seemed to be a little more activity than usual in moderns but there was very little
new. Few mint and proof sets were visible. There was a dearth of modern coins
in slabs.
I did get one real nice coin though. I cherrypicked a 1985-P small bust quarter for
$2.50! The coin is unc but has a slight rub and less than attractive toning. It also
has some mechanical doubling which is the first I've seen on this variety. The coin
may have been pulled from circulation back in the 80's but more likely is a mishandled
unc. This is only the third coin I've ever seen in "unc" and I've found only about "6"
in circulation since 1987. It accounts for well under 1% of production and does not
appear in mint sets. Most of the uncs of this date one sees are from mint sets.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Good question. I don't know if these were caused by a difference in the production
of the hubs or the working dies. But, it looks like the difference is in the hubs. There
are various differences on the obverse with the biggest being that the E of LIBERTY
is much farther from Washington's head than the others of this date. The entire bust
appears to be somewhat smaller and some of the differences are very dramatic.
