Your thoughts..Is this a double die?

This is a 1968 S Lincoln which shows doubling on "In God We Trust" under the chin, the ear also appears to be starting to double directly below the lobe as the 1984 double die, doubling evident on TY of Liberty and doubling on the date. I'm sure some may say this is strike doubling. The doubling on the motto goes Northeast as does the other doubling. Does anyone know if this would be classified as a double die. I was not able to find it in any of my books. The doubling is very obvious under 16x magnification. Is it possible to be strike doubling on all these areas?

Thanks
Ogden

That is what I call a close up! How did you take those pictures?

    Si vis pacem, para bellum

In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
  • This is a better picture.

  • Spooly, Russ taught me a trick to use a loupe. I tried using a 10x, 16x, and 30x Loupe. It was really hard to hold the loupe still while still clicking the shutter button. These were the best of what I could get.
    Appreciate your compliment.

The shelf like appearance of the secondary image usually means mechanical doubling.
    Tempus fugit.
  • I don't know why I'm having such a hard time having the right picture attach. I'm trying it again.

  • I must've missed something. I'm not seeing any links at all. First of all, is yours a proof? There were business strikes that year. The Cherrypickers' Guide has one listing for a proof DDO. It's FS#027.5 with moderate doubling on LIBERTY, IGWT and the date. URS-9 (126 to 250 known.) They note that there are several other dies that have the notch on the upper I in LIBERTY. This particular variety, in addition to the notch, has "valleys" in the center of the digits and the letters of LIBERTY. PR65 is $75. image
  • Richbeat, I have no idea what happened to the scans. The only one I have saved was the one of the ear. Note on the bottom where it seems to have another lobe. I have no idea if it was a proof, but it isn't now. The chin is doubled as is the motto and part of the date. I'll take some more pictures if you like but it's difficult because I have to use a loupe when I take the photo.

  • I really appreciate you posting those links. This is one of those scans where it is hard to tell what it is, but from what I can see I would have to agree with cladking that it's most likely machine doubling.

    Impressive.

No links and no indication of the thread being edited, but Spooly and CladKing saw something. hmmmm!

Almost certainly machine doubling. The lack of relief on the secondary image is the key. In extreme cases, even the interior details will show this type of doubling-usually, it is confined to the peripheral lettering.
