Will a Merc ever make MS70. Other Series ??

With all of the talk about MS70 coins this got me to wondering. Somewhere out there is a pristine roll of Mercs set aside that just may contain a MS70 coin ? PCGS has certified 9 MS69 Mercs, one 1939P non FB coin and eight 1939D's all FB coins. NGC has even certified less. Two 1939D FB coins, four 1945S non FB coins and two 45S micro's non FB. Seems like the chances are with the 39's or 45's. Seems a little strange that these two dates are the only ones to get 69's from the major grading services. I would think some other dates in the 40's would have examples worthy for a 69 or 70 grade also.

Any thoughts ? How about some of the other late date classic series coins from 1932 through 1964 ? Are 70's present now or are they also available for a 70 grade IYO ?

I honestly don't believe we'll ever see a Mint State 70 coin made. There's just too much going on with the minting process to allow for the "perfect" coin (outside of Commemoratives, of course).

If there was an outside chance of a single coin made, I would place that possibility on a State quarter.

  • I agree that there should be some 70's out there. If I had a 69 I would send it it now! I do have a 68 on the way but I doubt it would go 70 but I would be happy with a 69.

anyone have a 69 laying around?
  • I must agree with braddick, there are not any 70's in the mercs. I still cant understand how they could give a coin 69 with non full bands, that one (and a few others) have me buffaloed. image

If you think that there is a MS70 out there to be found, your probably dreaming. If PCGS hasn't graded one as of yet since 1986, what do you think the chances are of having one graded.

Well actually I may contradict myself. Look at it this way.

For 1, the minting process is suppose to be getting better, and now there are a handful of MS69 Statehood Quarters, not to mention over a dozen different dates in the Lincoln cents series that have graded MS69. I think the chances of having one graded is actually good, but we will see.

As for anything before 1999, my opinion is NO, we will never see a MS70.

Only if they bring back the design. Wouldn't that be a terrific idea. Proof DCAM's in that design, lordy.
  • It would seem that a MS69 in any series can only be as good as it can get. Even if a perfect coin was minted the logistics of getting it in a collectors hand will leave defects. We all dream of reaching with cotton gloves and pulling a freshly minted coin out of the press.......beating the mint rollers and baggers to it! I don't think Jeffersons will ever grade that high. If you look at the pop reports MS68's are super rare....not a well struck series. Even the MS67's look alittle rough to me. MS66 and MS67 Mercurys look much nicer comparing series....less marks and sharper strikes.

PCGS is not going to give a ugly merc the grade of MS70. The "eye appeal" factor still applies..... so ugly coin designs get a -1 right off the top. image

  • C' mon, Spooly. The only ones deserving neg. points for eye-appeal is them dirt-brown large coppers! image

Heck, Mercs, along with Walkers should recieve +1 and These should recieve 2! image

Ken, I'm sure I have seen a 43-D in PCGS69FB. It was at a Central States show and I ask to see it thinking a 43-D couldn't be that much, since it is in my opinoin the most common coin in high grade. Well, I was wrong, it was 7,000 or so. It was a toned monster, but 7,000 for a 43-D..WRONG...I have a 67 that cost 100 or so.

Dennis, I don't think PCGS uses the strike as a grading factor. From what I have seen it is strickly how clean and problem free the surfaces are.

  • I doubt a Merc. would ever attain an ms-70. Does anybody know what the oldest non comm. coin is that graded ms-70. I think the date would be very interesting?
  • the oldest ms70 is probable the 86 SAE and the gold ones also have some ms70's
    I don't know of any others off-hand

LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb
