Yet another Buff Nickel Question...Doubling this time..

I'm still trying to figure out this double die, doubled die, strike double, machine double thing. Now, with that in mind, what do you think this is on the attached Buffalo nickel? Can you see the doubling on the nose and neck? There is similar doubling on the hair braid and the large feather. I don't own Mr. Wexler's book on Buffs, and no one around here has one in stock so I apologize for my inexperience. Thanks, matt1920 Buffalo

Machine doubling. If it was a true doubled die, the secondary image would be in higher relief and you would more than likely see doubling inside the nostril. Hope this helps.
  • It helps alot KK, thanks. It looks neat to me. Does anyone collect these anomolies?

Kingmatt-If the doubling is extreme enough there are people who collect them. If you are into Buff varieties, you may want to check out some of the die polishing varieties such as the 2 feather and 3 1/2 leg stuff. Also, there's a good book on Buff doubled dies (which I co-authored) called "Treasure Hunting Buffalo Nickels." It explains in detail how to determine a true doubled die and explains the different classes of doubled dies.
