Some pretty sorry, ratty coins

I have seen notes before that have claimed that Hertitage's Internet auctions are a dumping ground for slow sellers, etc. While this may be somewhat true, I have cherry picked some nice coins from these sales, sometimes at or below Greysheet bid. So I know there are nice ones to be found.

However, I just got an e-mail from Heritage about a live Internet auction on Dec 14th. I looked at the coins and in general, what a bunch of sorry looking, low eye-appeal rejects. Many had flat toning, are graded MS60-62... yuck! I even considered a 1908-D MS62 $10 No motto Indian and then looked at the reverse. Part of the rim is missing/smashed.

There may be a few nice coins in here for those with the patience to go through all 379 offered. But based on my quick glace, I am disappointed. If Heritage wanted to really test this concept, why not offer a large selection of nice coins? They said in their note that most coins have no reserve. I can see why.

I took a quick glance at it also and noticed that I had previously seen all the lots in other auctions and that the coins did appear to be low end and had not sold previously.

Same goes for me. I rarely find anything nice in their weekly Internet-only auctions. Just an occasional cherry here and there.

Lately I've been a little disappointed in their regular auctions as well --- seems like fresh material is tough to come by these days. You guys must be hoarding everything.

    Blade,

You're not kidding. I just looked through the eight Walkers they have listed and they have a total of one that I'd allow in my set. Most look like they've been dipped to death.

I've been specializing in gold recently and looked at the images for 50% of them. What a train wreck.

What kills me is if they are really interested in testing this concept, step up and put some great coins in there without reserves. No guts, no glory.

  • I looked at the Saints this morning when I got the e-mail, and they didn't have any I needed, with the exception of the 1926, but I wouldn't bid stronger than 64 money for it even though it's in a 65 holder. By the way, as a pet rat owner, I am insulted by the use of the term "ratty" in this thread. My two pets are much more attractive than any of the coins I saw in the auction!
