Calling Mitch's Bluff

On another thread Mitch stated that he sold a nice PCGS graded MS67 1974D IKE for well under $3,000. This statement set off a flurry of PMs among IKE collectors.
Mitch, after thinking about it I'm saying BUNK. Whatever else anyone thinks, you are clearly one of the most savy dealers in the modern coin arena. To have sold such a coin so far below market without checking with any major collectors strains the imagination. The only possibility is that the coin is a super dog. Yet you prefaced your post by suggesting it was a nice coin. Also, my sense is that you would seek a downgrade before selling a clear dog.
So, I am saying it didn't happen. I calling your bluff, slapping your face with a glove, and suggesting that like most our posts, yours was bluster and hype
So there!!!

I sold it to a board member and, as you know, I can not name names. What I will do is email the board member now and ask if he/she will come forward to confirm the purchase on this thread (or if I can name who I sold it to).
That's all I can do. Wondercoin
P.S. Email has been sent to the board member
The hook is set. Now to start reeling.
Don't bother with a testimonial. Instead have the collector bring the coin forward. There are no fewer than 1/2 dozen collectors of IKEs who would gladly give him/her a quick $1,000 profit. That should be too tempting to pass up. Let's see well under $3,000. Sounds like about $2,500. I'll start at $3,500 for hoots.
Greg
I just want to know whether I will be getting the apology from you when you confirm what I said was 100% true?
I was only too happy to sell that nice Ike for under $3k. Do you think I care that there may have been another $1k to be had. Remember, I am the guy that sold around (19) CVC $5 Gold Commems PCGS-MS70 to Registry board members and customers around the same time as that Ike sale (the CVC's were a couple months earlier as I recall) for around $450/coin ($8,550 total). Last I saw on ebay, they were being offered around $3k/coin. That comes to $57,000 for the lot. OK - call then $2000/coin to get down to $38,000 Yeah Greg - I really want to beat down that Ike collector to let me buy his coin back to make a couple more dollars Wondercoin

"Hi...
Feel free to mention it. BTW it was $1400, Oct 2001."
And, does anyone here think the Ike was the only coin I sold HD? Maybe he liked my prices
Hey, maybe I should ask HD if he wants to make a couple thousand dollars pulling his Type Ike out of the set - I'm sure he needs the money
Greg: Do you have something to say to me?
Wondercoin
I wondered where HI Desert got all those nice coins (think he'd want to show some pictures - hint - hint )

This or, a person who is in tune with the Ike series is wrong, and someone who is in tune with ???? is right.
Reminds me of a story supercoin told of an Ike he tried to consign to a Heritage sale.
(Still do not care for them, but facts are facts)
Not sure if you roasted me or Mitch or both But, I have always said that if you sit down to play poker and after 5 minutes you can't figure out who the patsy is, then you are the patsy.
Mitch:
Curious what we will do for laughs on a Friday night. And, to think I could have gone to the Fire and Ice Winter ball at Alaska Pacific University.
Well I would prefer to see a post from HD, but in the spirit of the season I retract my statement that your post was hype and bluster.
BTW, IKEs have had an additional run this year, but at this time last year I was offering $3,000 for 67 C/N IKEs excepting the 71D, and 76D Type 2, and I wasn't able to by any at that price. So, I'm not sure the situation is the same as the gold example. In any event, please put me on your list to call the next time you have a C/N 67 to offer under $3,000

Thanks for stirring the pot.
Mitch,

Um, me too. In fact if you have a generic "people to email when I get nice Ikes in", put me on that.

Listen, I honestly recall selling it in excess of $2000, but we did a "few" deals and it could have been figured for less. But, let's go down "memory lane" and remember the history on these MS67 Ikes. Shortly after I sold my coin (which I bought at the Oct, 2001 Long Beach Show), prices erupted. Who remembers that 76(d) Ty 2 Ike on Teletrade that went for over $3,000 and it brought "shock waves" to serious Ike collectors? Many felt at the time that coin was around a $1500 coin. So, why did HD do so well on the 74(d) Ike and why did the 76(d) Ty 2 Ike break $3000 shortly thereafter on Teletrade? THE PCGS TYPE SET!!! IMHO, the creation and formation of the PCGS Type set changed everything in the pricing of Ikes. How many Registry sets were there again in 10/01? How many a year later?
Of course, I could not sell a 74(d) Ike for $2500 today - I couldn't even buy one at that level. But, as I mentioned on another thread to start off this entire situation, I would gladly contact Greg to offer him one at $5,000 if I got another coin in (and if anyone else PM's me I'll make sure to keep my eyes out for you too at $5000) and, IMHO, Greg's assessment of current value on this 74(d) in MS67 at $6500 is too high. Just my opinion of course. Heck, from memory, I recently bought the 74(d) Ike struck in Silver in PCGS-MS63 for around the same price (the other coin I bought at that Bowers sale besides the 1976(p) Proof Ike). Greg: Honestly - which coin would you rather own - a 74(d) Ike in MS67 or a 74(d) Ike struck in Silver in Choice BU where only a handful of coins are known to exist in silver? Want to talk about TRUE GREAT RARITY!! Play nice now, Greg. Wondercoin.
Reminds me of a story supercoin told of an Ike he tried to consign to a Heritage sale.
Huh? What story is that?
Tad: I know you are kidding, but, I buy coins like this 74(d) Ike nearly every day (or two) for collectors and am happy to work on 10% for the vast majority of these type buys. I bought the 74(d) Ike at Long Beach and added on a modest mark up for HD. There is no crime in that. If I could buy another 74(d) tomorrow for $4,000, I would gladly sell the coin for $4,400.
Again, I want to preface all this with the fact that I truly love great rarity Ikes. I was "pleased as punch" to buy the PCGS-MS63 1974(d) Silver Ike in that recent Bowers sale (a no question true great rarity for the date in Choice BU or better) in addition to the possibly unique "pattern" 1976(p) Proof Ike (Presentation Piece) Wondercoin.
A 74D in 67 or a silver 74D in 63. Both great pieces for a serious IKE collector. I would probably go with the silver 74D because I would guess I would have the chance to get another 67 later. Well in any event I sold my IKEs (except for some type pieces) so I am really out of the game. But, if I keep posting in these threads perhaps I will start to build another set. Especially if I can get thoses 67s from you for under $3,000
Greg
Again, my compliments to him.
Great question: a 74-D in true 67 or a 74-D 40% silver.
I've sold 3 of the 74-D's that are 40% silver. In fact one of them is the cover coin on the "Authoritative Referecne to Eisenhower Dollars". I also know where at least 3 more are.
I've owned 2 74-D's in 67 and only one is a true solid 67. I know where at one other is that is a solid 67.
Sure there are a few more of both, but seems to me they are about the same rarity, and I'll tell you the MS67's look a heck of a lot nicer. The 40% silver 74-D's are ratty looking.

mitch also sold me a coin that was ms68 one of a kind for a fair price.
if I were you I would pay attention when he has one for sale .
rob.
Now, a very short time later we see a 1948(s) quarter in NGC-MS68 selling for close to $20,000 when the PCGS-MS67 commands around $750. Countless other examples as well
Look, let's face it, the 74(d) Ike in MS67 is a very tough coin to locate, but it is possible a dozen more are discovered in the next few years (look at the pop of coins like the 71(p) Ike in MS66 and (more to the point) the 71(s) silver in MS67 going up and up and up. It is unlikely (IMHO) that another dozen 74(d) silver Ikes IN ANY MS GRADE will be discovered in the future (anyone disagree?), let alone in Ch BU or better grade. Given the choice - fill my order with 74(d) silver Ikes (I am a buyer for as many more coins as you can offer me at fair prices - I'll buy all I can, within my spending budget of course. I love truly rare Ikes Wondercoin.
What's your buy price on the 74-D's 40% silver in CH BU (MS62-63)????

Could you let me know if you have either the MS62 or MS63 grade, or both available at this time.
