1901s Barber dime - a nice find

It's not the key to the Barber dimes, even if you remove the 1894s from the mix, the 1895o and 1895 must be considered the keys, and there are several in 1896 and 1897 that are pretty tough too. But a really nice 1901s is a killer to come by.

I found one yesterday and couldn't help myself, it was just calling to me. So, wrap it up, I want it. It has very full liberty on the ribbon and very little wear overall, even the cereal on the back looks fresh enough to eat. Really a pretty dime and darn hard to get ahold of.

  • Looks like there is very little luster but its probably just the scan

No, it's not an AU so little lustre left. It was used in the economy of the early 1900s but not for very long.

the image of the reverse was "unavailable"...

it appears to easily be xf though...has the "new",Type 2 obverse and probably "old" Type 1 reverse...

'01-S in xf is one of those Barber keys that is "available" but that's owing to it's current fully-priced status...'01-S that hasn't been "messed with",which appears to be the case with yours, is by no means a common find...i've seen quite a few higher grade examples of this date that show obvious signs of having been disrespectfully cleaned at some time in the past...but it seems they still have that full price on them...
    i consider '01-S a key...it represents change...no pun intended...design change in 1901 is what i mean...

    good find,LanLord...

mr1874, I have yet to find a book on Barber dimes, did the design under go the same changes that the quarter and half dollar did at about that time?

As for images, I think the server needs an enema, it's been having problems with bringing up images for a while now. If you hit the F5 key a few times or close and reopen the image window a couple times it will eventually come up. It gets agrivating to need to do that tho.
  • I think it's atleast xf-45!

LanLord,"The Complete Guide to Barber dimes," by David Lawrence i recommend for you...a basic reference for the Barber dime collector complete with photos that gives one information to be able to tell the difference between a true repunched mintmark and "shelf doubling",for example...he gives you information that can be applied to other series of coinage, not only Barber dimes...

Even though now a little dated from the standpoint that new discoveries have been made since he published it and the pricing is obsolete,i consider his book to be "the book" on Barber dimes and told Dave this a few years ago...

i'd loan you mine but it's a signed copy i ordered from Dave in 1991...i consider this book as much a part of my Barber collection as the coins themselves....

    Best wishes
    David Lawrence
