Preliminary Results on 1967 Auction, subject to audit

A quick tape on Skylaneflyer's 1967 lots (296 of them):

3 no sales, including a Clemente Checklist PSA 9,

Gross realized: $63,325.

Worth noting: a PSA 9 set "books" for around $60,000. Skylane's GPA was 8.6 or so. There were a bunch of 10's, which may have pulled the price up(?). Overall, he should be thrilled. I know I was surprised that the auction brought so much interest in what appears to be a soft market, at least from ebay's standpoint.

Feel free to audit my numbers and/or comment on the results.

<edited to take out the PSA 10 Mantle which wasn't part of the set, I'm told. Only the PSA 8 Mantle was in the set.>

  • Also, let's hear from some of the winners!
  • I bid, but did not win either of the 67 Reds 10s. One was $460, and the other over $305, the Perez 9 went for nearly 2x SMR, I got tsome things, all over SMR, but they were nice and 9s for some cards are hardt o find. All-in-all, he should be happy with the results. A single lot sale would not, in my opinion, have generated nearly the buzz or $$$$ flow.

  • I was outbid on the Perez as well. I just couldn't justify going that high ($700+) on it, when you factor in the extra 15%. I'm sure Joel is very happy with the results, and the 67's were absolutely gorgeous!

TG -- Looks like I came up about $60,000 short on the set. It was real mixed. Some stuff sold high and other stuff went pretty reasonable. I agree that Sky did pretty good. If you include the two big lots (255-8's and 91-9's), I placed competitive bids on 63% of the cards in the set and only won 23.
  • I won the Hall of Famer PSA 9 that i was after . I was forced to pay about $125.00 more than i was expecting to and it ended up at over double SMR. Having said that it was the nicest copy of that card that i have seen (Dan's copy certainly is equally as nice) and will be in my collection for many years to come

    Toppsgun-

Just for clarification...is the $63,325 the actual dollar amount after commissions that Sky will receive (if everyone pays)?

  • John,

No. I just added up the final prices from the price grid page, which includes the 15% buyer's premium. To calculate what you're looking for, divide $63,325 by 1.15, then multiply by whatever percentage the seller gets. If the seller gets 90% (for instance), Sky ends up with a shade under $50k. I guess that means the auction house pockets around $13,500 for its efforts.

  • Gentlemen,

The entire net proceeds to me were $52,400.00 plus the 3 unsold cards. Toppsgunn, a special thanks to you for conducting the audit for me - that saved me some time and after communicating with Superior later today, your numbers tied out perfectly with theirs - nice job!

I hope everyone was able to buy the 67's they wanted as there were many nice cards in the set. Thanks to those of you who bid.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays to you all,

    Sky

    Sky-

Can you give us a "ballpark estimate" on how your net proceeds compared to your original cash outlay for these cards. I understand if you would not want to get into specifics.

    Thanks,

    John
  • Gentlemen,

Overall, I lost money on the set. To provide specific amounts probably wouldn't be best to share here on the boards.

But what I would share is that the amount of the loss was easily offset by the amount of enjoyment of putting the set together and the many friends I made along the way. Some of the cards brought huge multiples of what I paid. The ones that I got hurt on were some of the commons that I reached for on Ebay. A few of the star cards that I had recently acquired went for less than I had anticipated.

In the end, I felt Chris Porter was excellent to work with and my thanks to the Superior team.

    Regards,

    Sky

  • It was pretty sneaky how they put the Mantle 10 with Sky's cards image.

How much did the Mantle 10 realize?
  • In an effort to console Sky, if he needs it, if he'd have put the money spent on this into the stock market a couple of years ago, it's possible that he might have done worse.

The cards I have bought over the past two years have done better than many more traditional investments, even if a few of them are worth less now.

  • I think that the results were very impressive. Here is a high grade complete set near the end of the vintage years, and it sells for much more than SMR. I don't know what the SMR was for this particular set, but based on the 8.62 set rating, it was probably about $42000. The 10's may make it a little higher. The sales price of $63325 plus the three returns put the sale at about 1.5X SMR overall.

On a previous thread, someone said that the way to calculate value on a set with a rating of 8.62 woudl be to multiply the SMR for PSA 8 by 162%. Doing that gives us 16,243 X 1.62 = $26,313. Obviously, PSA 9's presently have a nice premium to them.

If Skylaneflyer was expecting more than this, I would be surprised. Perhaps he was hoping for more, but I would have to say this is a major success. It shows that if yu have a very high grade complete set, you can expect a premium. What we don't know is how well it would have done if it had been sold a one item.

Overall, it makes me feel better about my 61 set @ 8.51.
